Hello all hope everyone's well. Need some suggestions. I am in the process of building the AMT White Freightliner SD and need some suggestions for the color on the Cummins NTC 250. I know the box shows it in tan, but curious if white was used as well. if anyone can help I'd certainly appreciate it. Thank you.

I have never seen if Freightliner had any special color on the engines delivered to them so I would go with Cummins Beige.

Hakan,

Hello and thank you for the reply. I know KW's and Pete's had white engines from the factory in the 1970's but wasn't sure about White Freightliner. I know the AMT Diamond Reo FL116 kit features a Red Cummins NTC 350 or a 370. I will stick to the beige. have a great evening.

If you don't have true Cummins beige, my go-to is Tamiya's Wooden Deck Tan (TS-68).  I find it's not as dark as other "tan" colored paint.

Jerry, the company that my dad worked for years ago bought over forty brand new 1983 Freightliners at once. They all came with 3406 Cats in them, They all had yellow engines but two, they were white. My point being is that if two white Cats could slip through in 1983 then it may have been possible for a couple of white Cummins to slip through in the early 70s. It is correct that tan would be standard, but if you had your heart set on white, I wouldn't be afraid to paint it white.

If I speculate maybe Caterpillar didn't have enough yellow engines in stock to fill that large order when it came and sent a couple of white ones to be able to complete the order in time.
Because if the engine was white it could have been supposed to go to the Peterbilt plant instead of the Freightliner plant as Peterbilt used white engines through 1984 and Caterpillar was the last engine manufacturer to deliver white engines to them.
But there are exceptions to the rule as you can find engines with factory color in Peterbilts before that date and engines painted white after.
Kenworth had white engines through 1975, but as with the Peterbilts you could see white engines after that date and manufacturer color before, Autocar also had white engines appearently through 1968-69 and manufacturer color after that.

Thanks all. The cab will be probably a 1970-72 era White Freightliner SD (the kit is from 1977). Will start posting pics as soon as I can. Assembly at this point is in it's infancy stages. But I can reveal that the cab has been painted Tamiya TS-11 Maroon, and the frame and assorted frame parts (axles, fuel tanks, battery boxes, drive wheels, etc.) will be painted in Rustoleum Rustic Orange Satin. Sort of a Virginia Tech paint scheme.

I was unaware that Autocar had white engines.

I've used Tamiya Deck Tan XF-55 for Cummins Beige.  It's pretty close.
