This is my 63 cougar 2 dragster. Its been sitting on the "shelf of doom" for a long time. Needs a little work, finding it hard to paint the body, paint keeps on running no matter what. Only a few mission g parts but I may be able to get by. Its still prob not going to be as good looking as I hope in the end, but at least it will be finished.

Lol, this one is really bad... I'm going to attempt to do something to the paint, maybe some really good wet sands. I painted and stripped this stupid thing 4 times in counting! But now I have tried a new color...GREEN, maybe green is more forgiving then red.

It's looking pretty good to me. Tough kit. I think I had it three times. Never finished a one.  If I remember right one I tossed against a wall. :D  Really.

I know how you feel!

This was the model back in the mid '80's ("Those Famous Fords" reissue) that turned me off to spray cans forever! And yes, this can be a particularly fiddly kit as I did finally build one years ago. Neat kit with lots of detail though, and it's very interesting to see this turn into a drag car! B)

Thanks! I got it missing the flip up headlights, so I'm going to have to make them. I did airbrush the green this time but its just a little dark in some areas.

OK please tell me .. How in the world did you manage to paint that thing.

Well, I airbrushed just about everything. Gave up on spray cans for bodies back in 1985 as like you, I tried three or four times to paint the model and for whatever reason the paint kept curdling. I got my first cheap airbrush (a Badger 150?) and have been using airbrushes ever since.

In the case of my Cougar II, I used a barrier coat of Future Floor Wax (actually an acrylic liquid) as I stopped trusting kit plastic since about 2004-05. I then airbrushed on a several coats of Plastikote T-35 Gray primer, then the color coat was Duplicolor 'Claret Red Metallic' (don't remember which car manufacturer), which was very close to the Cougar's metallic red.

Believe it or not, the whole works was clearcoated with Tamiya's X-22 water based acrylic (airbrushed), then rubbed out with Detail Master's polishing cloths and polished up with Meguiar's Car Cleaner Wax and a chamois cloth.

A bit time consuming, but I'm a BIG believer in not doing body painting till everything else is built up first. I learned a long time ago that painting the body first can lead to big troubles as you have no idea how things will fit in the end. I want to make sure I have a method of getting things in without ruining a paint job with scratches, or breaking something on the body due to lack of test fitting.

Hope this helps!

Since it's a phantom drag car, maybe you can make that work for you. Maybe give it a lizard-ish or snake-ish or fishy name and graphics?

That's a great idea!

Looks like there's too much paint going on too soon, in case you're looking for tips

Lol yes I tried putting on small coats before but it ends up just building up really super fast and running. So here I slapped some clear green paint on super quick small coats, and it seemed to do the trick. Currently I'm humble with the dark green look, and find it at least somewhat presentable even though a more consistent green would make me more happy. Aka I'm making excuses so I don't have to strip the paint again.

And yes thank you for the tip. BTW do you think I should put the clear on small coats or just not worry about it?

Its done I guess. I just remembered why this was on the shelf of doom to begin with... Its freaking cursed. Just screwed up the paint for a second time today. I am now retiring it to the shelf of doom again. At least now its painted rather then white. I may get back to this in the future but right now I need to stop building it before I whip it at a wall.
