Absolutely the most difficult paint I have ever worked with hahah. A note to all, the base coat needs to be 100% white with no burn through. Still took 6 coats. I actually love the zero paints product. I think it’s just the nature of “yellow pearl”.

What the most diffuclt paint you have dealt with?

Coincidentally, Testor Boyds Alumicoupe Yellow. Same problem. Would have worked better over a yellow primer.

Yellows are notoriously difficult colours for coverage - I’m thinking of using Badger stynylrez neutral yellow primer next time I try a yellow paint job.  It may need to be made a bit paler with white primer, depending on the colour I choose. I like the Zero paint range as well, Steve Hemming (who runs Hiroboy) is a good guy and is very helpful - I must make sure to say Hi to him this weekend at Scale Model World.  The paint I’ve found the hardest to spray so far is candy red, but stuck with it and after five attempts had a great paint job.

Zero paints aren't at the show this year Jim.

I’ve had nothing but coverage problems with yellow paints. Pearl paints must be at least somewhat transparent, and I’m sure this makes it worse. I’m painting Testor’s chrome yellow over white primer this week. Should be fun.

I have painted yellow, but I have even more trouble with the yellow pearl. It’s translucent even in the bottle before it is sprayed. Much more so than the solid yellow colors such as from Ferrari

... white base needs to be flawless.

Would a light yellow-cream basecoat make the pearl yellow appear a bit less  .... oh, ... 'too thin-looking'?

If I try it again, I would consider doing a yellow basecoat. However, I did notice that forum members are right about the white base coat making the yellow “pop”. I’m affraid anything less than white will just add additional paint thickness without the desired effect: to get the most contrasting yellow color without plastering on an inch of paint.

Soooo I think I ruined this body :/

24 hours later and the paint is dry to the touch, but still takes fingerprints. Do you think I sprayed too thick of a coat, and it ate into the plastic through the primer? Thank goodness it was a cheap kit (Tamiya 300zx z32). Might have to buy a new kit and start over...

anyone experience this this by praying too thick of a coat of Zero paints?

Hi Geoff, I know that Zero haven’t got a stand at this year’s show but Steve usually comes on the Saturday so, if he stays true to form, I’ll say a quick “Hello”.  Looking forward to catching up with you Geoff on Saturday, I’m involved with the judging (11:30 to 3pm) but will be spending most of the rest of the day with the Hot Rod and Custom Car SIG (Hall 2, near Wonderland Models).

Yellow is definitely a pain to get to cover and even worse if it's pearl.

I always use a similar color as a base when I use pearl. I mixed up a pastel yellow acrylic as a base under the pearl nail polish I put on this Vette. It came out OK but I wish I had mixed the base about 1/2 as dark, I think the pearl would have popped more over a lighter base.

Honesty that is a good question.

This is a good technique for nearly any color.

I will usually shoot as close of a base color as I can find to the finish color I'm using.

I usually use a Duplicolor touch up paint for a base under MCW colors.

I'm generally not impressed with the metallic particle size in Duplicolor paint, but it works great for a base & it saves on my prized MCW paint.

As an example, I used a dark red Duplicolor base under the MCW "Plum Mist" on my '67 Bonneville.

I use this technique whenever possible.

Thanks for another look at that. I always liked that build and it put you on my personal radar. B)

We'll catch up with each other in the morning Jim, looking forward to meeting up, it's been too long.
