Oldcarfan27 Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 Saw these online and said "Whattha?!" Then an idea molded into my cranium, "Here's what to do with those junker 4x4 pickups and derelict Olds Toronados!" These are Float plane launchers and apparently they are common in the Great White North and Alaska. They rely only on the front drive wheels, so the rest of the vehicle is simply chopped off. But boy are they weird and interesting. Any opinions? Anyone want to build one?
espo Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 I think that's a cool idea. Not sure if these were damaged vehicles repurposed or just what they had to work with.
misterNNL Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 Somehow uglier than usual and no I would not spend my precious modeling time building one. Just my opinion but way outside my wheelhouse.
bbowser Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 Does anyone know of a 1/24 floatplane? That could be a dynamite diorama.
Jack L Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 yes 1/24 de Havilland Beaver its a simple kit out of production
Oldcarfan27 Posted November 7, 2018 Author Posted November 7, 2018 Funny thing is, you see the front of the car expecting to see a whole vehicle and then - nothing - and what's there looks like it's floating on just 2 wheels. Strange indeed!
Spex84 Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 These are awesome!! Thanks for posting I like the square-body Chevy versions.

disabled modeler Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 man..That kind of hurts in a way....My first real car was a 72 Olds Toronado...someday Id like to find a model or promo of one to have for my family owned car collection.

Deathgoblin Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 Seems a shame to waste a perfectly good Toronado, though. Even if the rear was wrecked, one or two of those should have been salvageable.
Rigor Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 Pretty cool but I think living in Alaska restoring a car is the last thing on your mind
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 Fascinating. I scored a complete, virgin Beaver not too long back; something really weird like these to handle it might be interesting... 1 1

Most aircraft model kits are 1/72 scale, 1/48 scale and 1/32 scale. Good luck finding a 1/24 scale aircraft model kit. Very rare and hard to find. The DHC Beaver is the only one in existence. Even that one is harder to find.

I guess my several 1/24 P-51s, P-40, two P-47s, several Spitfires (one on floats), Stuka, Harrier, Zero, two Hueys, Hellcat, Hurricane, Bf-109, FW-190, Hughes 500, and several WW I aircraft (all injection molded styrene, not balsa kits) are figments of my imagination. EDIT: There are two of the DH Beavers on eBay right now. There is also this kit, which I don't have: Edited January 17, 2023 by Ace-Garageguy
stavanzer Posted January 17, 2023 Posted January 17, 2023 I think, I have a Beaver in the Garage, right now.

larry ray Posted January 17, 2023 Posted January 17, 2023 Years ago I went to a car show a guy had a hot rod his hauler was the front half of a Tornado with a 4 wheel trailer welded to it.
JJ Deuce Posted January 17, 2023 Posted January 17, 2023 those are pretty interesting. I have an acquaintance that has the front half of a Cadillac Allante that was a test mule. That'd make a high-falutin' seaplane tug.
