JollySipper Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 Hey, guys........ I was wondering if anyone has used the DupliColor MetalCast paints to spray a body? There's a couple colors that I may would be interested in if a good finish could be gotten with them..... If you have any pics, please share them...... Thanks!
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 (edited) I've experimented with it, and have had mixed results. It's basically a candy color, essentially just a tinted clear. It was introduced initially to allow budget car builders to make fake AN-looking fittings from hardware store stuff. As with any candy or tinted clear product, getting even coverage without streaking is the trick. The material has plenty of pigment, covers well, and will flow out to produce a decent gloss that can be polished after sufficient drying. But technique is everything. I've had varying results depending on the colors I've tried, and atmospheric conditions (temperature and humidity). The spray-can nozzles don't really lend themselves to getting even coverage over large areas, but decanting and airbrushing should counter that. Edited November 24, 2018 by Ace-Garageguy 1
JollySipper Posted November 23, 2018 Author Posted November 23, 2018 Thanks, Bill..... It being a translucent paint means that it would need a base color, I imagine..... They make a very nice teal blue along with an orange that I would love to use on a project.
Deuces Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 Interesting subject... What other colors do they have?....
Can-Con Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 Metalcast red over a custom mixed metallic pink base,, and the blue. IIRC, I mixed up a metallic light blue for a base. Ont thing to remember with stuff is it's very sensitive to what clear you use over it. A friend of mine used the regular Duplicolor clear laquer over it and it wrinkled up like he sprayed it with paint stripper. I guess mine didn't wrinkle because I mixed the metalcast with the clear. That must have "tempered" it so it stayed smooth. To be on the safe side though, I'd use a cooler clear or go right to a water based acrylic like the Tamiya X-22. 1
JollySipper Posted November 25, 2018 Author Posted November 25, 2018 Those are beautiful, Steve! The pickup has that candy glow to it...... I have some Krylon clear that should work fine over these paints. Thanks, Guys! BTW, what would be a good base to put under an orange? Maybe gold?
