NYLIBUD Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 First images of an actual black hole.Enough energy to suck the earth into it in a split second..That's probably what doomsday will be,sucked in and killed by a black hole. ????
OldTrucker Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Looks like a out of focus picture of a doughnut !
iamsuperdan Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 I'm not sure what the big fuss is all about. We've had images of the black hole for decades. There was even a documentary about it. Didn't end well for the crew of the USS Cygnus though. RIP.

Scott Colmer Posted April 13, 2019 Posted April 13, 2019 I think I see a bunch of lost model parts and a sock floating around in there.
iamsuperdan Posted April 14, 2019 Posted April 14, 2019 Read this morning that many people with nothing better to do are complaining that the pic is kind of blurry.
peteski Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 They probably don't even realize that the color picture is not real colors (as humans see colors) - they were added to enhance the image which IIRC is not even taken in the visible light spectrum.
Flat32 Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 I'm amazed at how something so useless can be somehow used to justify so much effort and expense. Where does the money come from??

Where does the money come from?? Useless? It helps us understand the Universe. Or is that too nebulous for you, and you rather just worry about the more mundane goings on in your immediate neighborhood?

What we are seeing is in our neighborhood and that is about all we will ever see. There is always going to be something beyond anything discovered by our feeble methods.
misterNNL Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 Maybe we could find a way to send all negative stuff there.

Flat32 Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 I did a little research to answer my own question and checked on why the image is useful to those who sought it. I had no intention to start a debate and realize I shouldn't have posted my comment on this forum. I'll admit I was happy with the black hole theory. What I want to understand is gravity, light and quantum mechanics. I think the universe will become more understandable once these three become less theoretical. I'm not so amazed now.

Deuces Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 We won't even be a memory by the time that thing gets here..... ?
