porschercr Posted April 27, 2019 Posted April 27, 2019 (edited) What was the correct color for a 396 engine? Edited April 28, 2019 by porschercr
Snake45 Posted April 27, 2019 Posted April 27, 2019 Chevy Engine Red, which is a bright red-orange. Chevy Engine Orange was an earlier, pure orange color used on small blocks. All big blocks up through at least some point in the '70s were Chevy Engine Red.

The color of most , and most being the key word, Chevrolet v-8's in '67 was a little redder than the photo. That time frame seems to be when Chevrolet was transforming the shade of red used on their engines. My personal '67 El Camino purchased new had a 396 engine and the color was somewhat darker than your photo of what looks like a nicely restored engine. BY the '68 year model run the engines started to get a little brighter and just a touch more Orange to the color. The finish also transitioned from an almost flat finish to not quite a semi gloss finish not as shinny as the photo. This is based on the vehicles I have owned and it is possible that others had a different experience with theirs. The Big Block engines, 396, 402, 427, were built in the same engine plant and should in theory be all the same color. Most people would never call you on your engine if you wanted to paint it to match the photo. I think it all depends on if you're going for a 100 % showroom stock or a day two type build. I would only suggest you maybe knock down the shine a little when painting a rough iron casting like an engine.
1972coronet Posted April 27, 2019 Posted April 27, 2019 (edited) Additionally : the intake manifold was either painted engine colour ( 325hp and 350hp versions ) or "raw" ( read : unpainted) aluminium ( 375hp [L-78 version ) . So-called "Day Two" engines could be any colour , including the Nicꓘey Chevrolet 427 conversions which were Daytona Yellow in some (all?) instances (at least the 1967 models) . BubbaBrown Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 The only red I am aware of was some v8s in 1956, the rest for decades was chevy engine orange. Our eyes may perceive something different, and photographs may show something different and remember these were not masterpieces.
Snake45 Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Buy the Testor/Model Master Chevy Engine Red, in either enamel or acrylic, and use it right out of the bottle. It is THE CORRECT color for a '67 396 engine (and all early Chevy big blocks, and some of the small blocks, too, such as the LT1). It just doesn't get any simpler (or more correct) than that. BTW, that's probably the color on the engine pictured above.
porschercr Posted April 28, 2019 Author Posted April 28, 2019 Thanks for the replies. Got a bottle of the MM Chevy Engine Red.
