Curious what people use, for Matte and Satin Black paints, and what primer? Specific hobby paint is a bit more than I'd like to pay for the small amount ounce wise.

Depends on what your going to paint. Matt, semi-gloss and satin finishes have different properties. Matt finishes are dull and flat, with no reflectivity or sheen. Semi-gloss finishes, as the name implies, are less shiny than gloss finishes/paints. Satin finishes are below semi-gloss in terms of sheen and reflectivity. If you want a dead flat finish for areas like floor pans, headliners, wheel well interiors or fabric upholstery, use matt/flat paint. If you want a semi-gloss finish, like on frame rails and other specific chassis components, then use a semi-gloss paint. To replicate vinyl/leather in a car interior, use a satin finish paint or satin clear coat over glossy, semi-gloss or flat/matt.

I bought a can of this Rustoleum "High Performance Enamel" flat black a few months ago to paint some fireplace parts.

Naturally I had to try out the leftovers on some kit stuff and I was pretty impressed.

It laid down nice and smooth and even.

Works pretty nice!

I know you are trying to save money but I have found nothing better than Mr Color matt and satin black paints and their primers.  When you cut them 50/50 with thinner to spray it is really not that bad of a price to pay.  Decanting TS paints and airbrushing them also works well, just more work involved.

Personally, when I have tried to use a semi gloss or satin black paint, I have been very unhappy with the results.  It seems that the paint is splotchy or does not apply evenly, so I get some areas with a higher level of gloss than others.  To achieve a semi - gloss or a satin finish, I do the following.  I use a flat black and then apply Testors Model Master Gloss for a semi - gloss and Model Master Semi - Gloss for a satin finish.

For brushing and airbrushing, I've never found anything better than Model Master Black Chrome Trim. Lovely stuff, but now hard to find in my area, and Testor Semigloss Black isn't quite the same thing.

For rattlecanning, I'll use Rustoleum or Krylon Satin Black.
