Are those cabs the original MTFA Co. cabs before AITM took over?

They don't look like either. Dave's cabs are much better quality and I've never seen a M.T.F.A. cab molded in green. These are from the same origin as the M.T.F.A. cabs as far as original master goes. These may have been some experiments gone wrong. Every M.T.F.A. cab that I've ever had or seen was primer grey. I was told that was because that is what they used for mold release. I was going to use at least one of them despite the rough appearance. But, now it seems the best looking cab is just going to melt away with paint applied to it.

Well I'm pretty much at the end of my rope with these cabs. I don't think that I'm going to be happy with neither. The red one was dry, but the swirl marks began to "ghost" in the problem area which was mostly the driver's door. After it began to ghost it got soft again. I scraped to the paint off of the door to find the resin soft and flaking off. I think that the putty in the other cab will continue to crack because it is pretty thick as you can see in the crater pictures. These cabs are currently unavailable from Dave right now until he can make new molds.

So here you can see the swirly green resin after the paint came off. Notice the lower part of the door is fine with the primer still bonded.

In other news the spreader bed is coming together. So whatever kind of cab that I have to use, I'm planning to make a spreader.

If anyone has a spare GMC 9500 cab or even a C70 cab that they're willing to part with, let me know.

Thanks,

Brian

Almost looks like the resin wasn’t mixed well enough or didn’t cure all the way for it to be soft like that..??

I was wondering if you can contact Dave and get a Long Nose and just shorten it? He has one in stock and if there’s none he will cast you one.

That is a thought. More work than I had hoped, especially in thick resin, but definitely a possibility. His may be thinner than these. He has thinned a lot of the old M.T.F.A. kits. The mold is bad on the short nose and he said it would be a while on that one. I could just build a 318 long nose. :D

I'm pretty sure that is why it is swirly. It seemed cured, it's old enough to be cured. I've seen other swirly castings on Ebay before. I'll never touch a swirly casting again though.

I can’t load any pics of mine on here do to some kinda glitch on the site but he thined  it down I bought a long nose last year it would be easy to cut his resin cuts like butter.

Thanks Lee! I'm looking at all my options. I've even been looking at other floater trucks for inspiration. I may get a long hood.

Try making the file smaller. I had the same problem with pictures and after I made the file smaller they uploaded fine.

It can be older than the hills, if it isn't mixed right it will never cure...

Had a similar problem with the White 3000 cab I built over 30 years ago. It was a crude casting from Rick Manz, and had several soft spots. Tried many cures but found that super glue and baking soda filled the soft spot with a very hard and sandable filler that I primed and painted and it still looks perfect today.

It is too bad that you experience so much trouble with the resin cabs, while it is a very nice project.

If the problem only occurs at the drivers door, maybye it's an idea to cut out the resin door and replace it with a styrene version.

As far as i can see, the shape looks pretty easy to me.

Hermann.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Unfortunately, the red cab is junk. All of the areas that were troublesome before began to soften back up. On the other hand the "crater cab" (green one pictured before) is in usable condition now. So this project is back to moving forward. My original plan was a farm truck that was a little banged up, so I think this cab will work now. At least it's dry and not soft. :D

The bed is mostly done. I need to paint it before I install the belt, and I have to install the belt before I can install the spreader assembly. Then I can finish with the hoses.

Great project! It reminds of an article I read a couple of years ago: https://www.mynbc5.com/article/vermont-farmer-accused-of-spraying-manure-on-border-patrol-cruiser/11666597

That's quite a weapon your building!

Thanks for the story Dennis!!

A little progress. This truck will be a curbside, but I wanted to put an engine in it anyway. The engine I wanted is a 6v-53. The main difference between the 53 series and the 71 series that will be noticed right away is the valve covers are different. Of course the heads are different, the engine is slightly smaller and some other details. I want to make a better representation than this of a 6v-53 one day, but for this curbside truck, this one will work. I cut down an 8v-71 to make this one.

I love this truck, I lived in a farming community for most of my life and many friends are farmers.  For anyone asking why 2 wheel drive, if you need 4 wheel drive that truck should not be in the field it is too wet and ruts are not good because of the compaction of the soil in the field.

If you take the cab that is getting bad spots and scrap out the soft uncured resin spots you may be able to wash the resin with acetone carefully to remove the soft resin remains.

If you think a 78 square body cab would work I have a built up here you can have.  Unless this is an older truck. Just chop off the front?
