Had this idea for a little while . The North Hollywood shootout happened in LA back in the mid-90's. It was a notorious crime but if you haven't heard of it, its all over google & youtube.  The idea for this model is to show a period correct car that would have been involved in the response & heavily damaged from gun fire. A couple reference pics were used to get the effects (I do not own these).

Base coat white on body, followed by the addition of the black coat & some interior details. Ive added some entry bullet holes to the body with matching exit holes on the interior doors & seats. Added the shattered glass look to the interior using shaved clear plastic. The holes in the seats and doors were filled w/ loose cotton from a q-tip & painted yellow to simulate cushioning. Since this is a heavily used car in the fleet, Ive added a few rust spots to the body as well. Also added seat belts to the front seats.  The black trim on the body is rough in these pics because there will be chrome trim over top of it.

More interior details. I found some 1:35 scale shell casings (didnt even know such a thing existed) that fit great on this build to simulate some of them landing on the passenger side seat. Added more shattered glass to the dash, police electronic equipment to the center console, a baton & a map.

Glad that I was on vacation from work that week ! I used to make deliveries in the San Fernando Valley / North Hollywood area ( all-over Los Angeles , really ) ; there's a good chance that I could have been in that area when that went down !  I watched it on T.V. at home ----- I was upset when I saw the vintage Jeep J-Series pickup ( a 1963 model , if I remember ) get blown to bits .

Those cars -- and others ( like the 1971 Satellite in the background in one of your photos ) -- are at some LAPD museum of sorts .

Keep up the great work , man !  Cool subject !

I used to see wrecked LAPD and LASO cars all of the time on my routes --- one-of-which was a car involved in the North Hollywood Shootout which was salvageable : its entire passenger-side was wiped , but safely repairable .

Interesting project, neat work on the bullet hole in the interior, One suspicion is that the reference pictures are from a movie car rental pen and not the real LAPD car as john noted the real car went back in service. Don't stop I want to see it done

You may want to correct the thread title from "West" to "North", Ron. I worked just south of downtown L.A. at the time and followed the story on the radio - it filled up the TV news that Friday evening.

That's at the LAPD Museum on York Boulevard near Figueroa in the Highland Park area. Went there once to meet James Ellroy at a book signing - they did it inside a jail cell. Interesting place to check out if you're in the area.

I meant to put North, Don't know why I typed "west". Its corrected thanks.

Check out the movie SWAT. They depict that shoot out in the opening scenes and it appears they used some news coverage from that shoot out as well.

There was also a pretty good TV movie made about it in 2003: "44 Minutes: The North Hollywood Shoot-out."

I lived in N. Hollywood for several years and know that neighborhood.  But on the day of the shoot-out in 1997, I was on a business trip in Asia.  Turned on the TV in the hotel room in Taipei, and there was the old neighborhood with bullets flying all over it.  Quite a shock.

There would be no rifle casings in the police car. The LAPD didn't have rifles then. That's why they were outgunned during this incident.

Yes and no. The patrol guys didn’t have rifles, but the swat guys who eventually responded & took out the shooters did. Also the patrol guys went to local gun stores to secure rifles that they were able to use

This car wont have a prisoner partition between the front & rear seats so I didn't have anything to mount the shotgun on .Scratch built one & attached it. Got the chrome trim applied around the windows & added rust & light paint damage.

The photos are of a real LAPD CV that was damaged in the shootout, that is not a movie rental unit, keep in mind that were more than just one patrol units that received damage that day, I have no doubts some of them were repaired and returned to duty.   The unit in the photo is a part of I think the LAPD's personal collection as it sits in a covered lot with other ex LAPD units.

All the black & chrome trim for the windows is finished. Added a few more bullet holes to the hood & front glass. For the rear I  have the whole back glass blown out.

Of course the SWAT guys had rifles. They were late to the party though. Thank God they got there when they did.

If you're modeling a North Hollywood Division B/W, then there should be NO spent rifle cases in the car.

Is that a rear deck light that you added? Are you trying to make a slick top? The regular patrol cars (the first that would have been on the scene and all shot up) all had light bars. A heavily damaged slick top car probably wouldn't be accurate as those were driven by the SWAT/other specialized guys who arrived late to the party.

Not criticizing. It seems like you're striving for accuracy so I want to help.

Thanks for the input but Yep its going to be a slick top car because I hate that era lightbar & yes im aware of who drove them. Im sure there was at least one slicktop that got some bullet damage during the exchange, for instance the still shot that I attached showing the  SWAT caprice that was used by officers for cover while the shooter used that white sedan for cover.

Great job, excellent details.Im sort of a a police car fanatic, for lack of a better word.Yours is coming out great. And that was some insane shootout in N Hollywood that day. There was a TV movie on the shootout called 44 minutes ,as the incident lasted that long...One guy took his own life. And the second guy was shot several times, and killed in a shoot out between a hi jacked car and a police cruiser. From what a friend told me, there  are still old bullet holes in some of the surrounding buildings,to this day.
