gtx6970 Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 (edited) Ok, With us being in the new place. My old 5 ft tall cases are not going to work, as I simply do not have the floor space for them any longer I have an area above the family room ( I'll call it a ledge so to speak ) I was thinking either build glass shelving with glass front or buy some nice wall mounted cases. The area I have avail is approx 4.5" tall and maybe 20' in overall length. I'm thinking something like this as an example. Not cheap by any means . But I think these would work perfectly . And it doesn't have to be lighted. But I'm not against it either Based on this size , I need 2 ,,,maybe even 3 of these https://www.displays2go.com/P-33996/LED-Wall-Showcase-Locking-Doors Edited July 14, 2019 by gtx6970
1930fordpickup Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 Bill that is a nice case. I like the fact that it locks also.
Brizio Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 Very nice display! Unfortunately is not sealed, so you need to clen your models after a while.

That case is 39" tall...did you intend to say you have approx 4.5 feet (instead of inches)? The case also weighs over 100 pounds...will your ledge handle that?

Ive been up on said ledge painting it so I'm confident it will handle the weight no problem
gtx6970 Posted July 14, 2019 Author Posted July 14, 2019 The ledge in question. Locking it is of no concern to me A- its 7 ft above the floor B- no one will ever open it except me
Dave Ambrose Posted July 16, 2019 Posted July 16, 2019 I wonder how well you'll actually see the cars in that location. I know my eyesight isn't the greatest, but for me, the cars would be there, but not very viewable.

The cases im interested in are lighted. Plus I can run some auxiliary lighting there as well if needed. Im not so much concerned with seeing them up close. But more so get them out of boxes and displayed the best i can . At least for maybe a couple more years untill my girls leave home. After that one of the spare bedrooms will become office/ car room. That will hold about 20 models. So $378 divided by 20 equals $18.90 per model. Plus the higher you go, the less you can see the models. Here's my recommendation. https://www.containerstore.com/s/race-car-display-cube/d?q=display cases&productId=10001594 Nine dollars each with free shipping for orders $49 dollars or more. These cases are awesome, the two halves fit perfectly and look seamless when joined. Very clear 360 and smooth. Stack perfectly. 10-1/4" wide x 5" deep x 4" high. You could line the shelf with these stacked two high. I have about ten of these and I love them. I'd be happy to take some photos if you'd like.
Theo Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 If you have an Ikea within driving distance, this is a nice affordable option (although not totally sealed). I have a couple of them and can fit about 5 cars easily on each shelf. With some acrylic risers can get up to 9-10 per shelf. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80269122/#/10119206

It’s very nice, especially for the money.
Plowboy Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 I have the display cases from Carney Plastics. They'll hold 21 models. I have them mounted to the wall in my garage.

robertw Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 Built a new display case in a room over a year ago, 12 feet long and 8 feet tall. Wood panels on each end glass shelves every 5 to 7 inches with full length glass doors to keep the dust away. I've discover that the shelves above 6 feet you're basically looking at the bottom of the kits (obviously the taller you are the more you'll see). Each shelf is 16 inches deep and there is lots of light in the room. In the end the two top shelves have become usefull only for storage of kits that didn't turn out well or ones that I don't want people to see clearly. Also keep a small step stool in the room. for when it is needed. Did end up with a foot tall shelf on the bottom which I figured I could use for further shelves but it has ended up the most full with tall or larger models. From time to time I build more then just cars. Should have enough room now to hold everything I'll build during the rest of my life.

robertw Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 I would oblige if I could post a pic of the display case but the room isn't beig enough for me to back up and get a shot of it all in and secondly I've never set up an account with a photo hosting site.
Modelbuilder Mark Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 A large number of my completed models I too do not currently display, they are in stack-able Rubbermaid style containers, with foam partitioning that I take them to shows in. For those that are not in those, I keep in individual display cases. I used to buy the old AMT cases, but they simply got too expensive. The last few years, I have been picking these up from Hobby Lobby. If I am near there on a Saturday, and there is nothing else I need, I go ahead and use the weekly coupon to pick one up for the stash. To top that off, when they had their summer clearance a few weeks back, they had several for $2.49 so I stocked up. I even picked up some of the long skinny ones, as two or three small hot rods will fit in them. With these, I can "stack" them 4-5 high comfortably. There can also be bouht in bulk for about $5 each direct from the manufacturer here https://www.pioneerplastics.com/product-category/display-case/diecast/ Since I too have no real display area, I have a simple have a cheap bookcase, Like this $25 one from Target https://www.target.com/p/5-shelf-bookcase-room-essentials-153/-/A-54376271?preselect=54360637#lnk=sametab that I use to stack the cases on. May not be a cool as a display cabinet, but as they are sealed, I never have to worry about dusting them, etc.

OldNYJim Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Thanks buddy! I like those ones Mark posted above too!
gtx6970 Posted July 26, 2019 Author Posted July 26, 2019 Thanks all. I think Im gonna order 3 or 4 of the Carney Cases for the money I think they may be my best option.
shoopdog Posted July 27, 2019 Posted July 27, 2019 I have three of Carney's cases, you won't be disappointed.

Plowboy Posted July 27, 2019 Posted July 27, 2019 (edited) I have three of the Carney cases and getting ready to buy a fourth. I like the mirror backs as it allows both sides to be viewed. I recommend getting them without the dividers. Smaller models like compacts and '30s, you can fit four to a shelf. The bigger '60's and 70s models like Impalas, Galaxies etc. take up more room. Three will fit OK. But the center section could get tight on some of them. Edited July 27, 2019 by Plowboy
