crowe-t Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Will the SS hood from the AMT 1969 Camaro SS396 Convertible fit an AMT 1968 Camaro? I believe this AMT 1969 Camaro is a re-issue of the old MPC 1969 Camaro Convertible. I know Replicas And Miniatures of Maryland makes an SS hood for the AMT Camaro but I also need the 396 and the convertible top boot from this kit so I thought I'd also be able to use the hood too.
Snake45 Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 The hood's not a drop-in fit, but if you want it bad enough, you could graft the central section of this hood into the AMT '68 hood. I think the R&MoM hood is for the Revell '69 kit, (unless he's also added one for the '67 kit), but it would be correct for a '68 396 Camaro as well. It is slightly too small for the AMT body, and would need to have material added to the edges. I know this because I once put the AMT '68 hood in the Revell '69 body, and I had to shave it down slightly all the way around. The engine in the AMT/ex-MPC '69 Camaro isn't very good. You can do better. I can't promise you the convertible boot in that kit will fit the AMT body, either. The ex-MPC '69 Camaro bodies are notably narrower than anybody else's. Might work, might not.
Mark Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 The engine in that Camaro might actually be the best thing in the kit, though admittedly it's not the greatest big-block Chevy out there. I believe it's from the MPC '71-'72 Chevelle, though some parts are unique to the Camaro kit.
crowe-t Posted July 24, 2019 Author Posted July 24, 2019 Replicas And Miniatures of Maryland has this SS hood for an AMT Camaro. https://public.fotki.com/crstan/replican-and-miniat/replicas-and-miniat/100-3003-jpg.html Years ago I built an AMT '67 Camaro and used the hood from this MPC69 Camaro SS kit in the attached picture. I remember it fit but it was a long time ago. I believe this is basically the same as the AMT 1969 Camaro SS396 Convertible in my above post. The AMT 1969 Camaro SS396 Convertible would help with the hood, engine and convertible boot. I considered using a Revell '67 Camaro but there are too many differences from a '68 Camaro. The AMT '68 Camaro isn't a great kit but it it's a '68 and even has the exact interior I need.
Snake45 Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Okay, it looks like the R&M hood is exactly what you need. It's mislabeled, though. That hood is not correct for '67 SS Camaro, it's for '68 SS396 and all '69 SS.
SCRWDRVR Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 (edited) Yes with a touch of trimming, I wish I had shaved the edges a touch so it would sit in a little more before I painted it though Edited July 25, 2019 by SCRWDRVR
SCRWDRVR Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 A little heat and a touch more arch in the hood or shaved in the mid section to sit in a bit would have probably done it, That is off the 69 Hard top kit I had from years ago that I derided not to rebuild.
stavanzer Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 I just tried the MPC Convertible Hood on my AMT Camaro. Width is fine but, but the MPC hood is too long for the opening on the AMT. I'll have to shorten the hood, a tiny bit, to get it to drop in. (At least on my kits)
