AMT "Ala Cart"

Could be the '60s one from the double kit with the '30 Ford Roadster or the new tooled kit.

Also has been in most, if not all reissues of the AMT '29 Ford roadster.

AMT has never made a correct Dodge 270 hemi. They used what appears as a Chrysler hemi block and made the other parts fit it. Last year, I created the Dodge 241-270 hemi using the proper measurements from a real engine located at a salvage yard near me. The Dodge isn't only considerably smaller, the heads are different as well as the water pump housing. Below are a print of the engine I created as well as a pic of the reference block. I well post a w.i.p. of it if anyone is interested.

Yes. I 3d resin printed it. There aren't any lines.

That's why I love this forum!

I built that very same engine stock, painted it Model Master's Chrysler Engine Red, with the raised type and ram in white, back in 1987, and it must've been raided out of my AMT 1929 Ford roadster kit.

I couldn't remember where it came from...

Thanks fellas.

Would you happen to know what year and make of 1:1 Dodge that those motors showed up in first?

The Dodge Red Ram "hemi" engine was introduced in 1953 with a displacement of 241 cubic inches, about 120 HP.

'55 saw it grow to 270 cu. in.

For '56 the deck was raised and displacement went up to 315.

In '57, it grew again to 325.

Far as I recall, it was available across the entire Dodge car lineup. The last high-performance D-500 twin-carb version made about 310 HP.

It's important to remember that it's different from the "poly" engine available somewhat concurrently, though the "poly" and Red Ram share the same tall deck block.

The Red Ram hemi has the smallest exterior dimensions of the Mopar hemi engine lineup, which is why it was used in Barris' Ala Kart.

The first issue AMT Ala Kart kit, and the later '29 Ford kits that include it, represent it roughly scale-correct.

The retooled Ala Kart engine is ridiculously UNDER scale, stupidly about 1/32, in a 1/25 scale model.

1953 or 1954.  Dodge only had one car line in several trim levels back then, no compact or intermediate cars, all were the same size.  Not having looked anything up, I'd guess 1954.  Dodge supplied the pace car for the Indy 500 in '54.  Back then pace cars were chosen because of some sort of advancement and not because the manufacturer got a deal to do so.

Thanks Ace and Mark.

I displayed mine on an engine stand next to my stock 1941 Plymouth coupe that I "copped out" with a long antenna and the driver's police spotlight from the Heller "Magpie" police Renault 4CV kit.

The car was glued with Testor's and just recently fell apart and was added to a parts box, but that engine is still intact!

Sorry to hear that about the Ala Kart reissue, I had a friend that waited and waited to either find one, or for it to be reissued.
