Well I started this kit today.  On car models I usually start with the body, cleaning things up, scribing and doing any needed customization.  As this is my first big rig, I concluded that the frame. suspension and engine were likely the best start points.

Getting to the frame, it needed a lot of clean up.  Given it is a 30 year old kit, but the mold lines and sink marks on the frame were unbelievable.  Took a bit of sanding and some Tamiya putty to clean it up.  And, to make the build start official, I glued the engine halves together ?

Gerry - welcome to the BRBO and the rig side ! I've watched your car builds come together,  and know you'll make this project another work of art!

Moving to the body, the clean up of sink marks continued.  Everywhere a rib or part connection is, a corresponding sink is on the reverse.  I did decide to open the hatch on the cab.  I will need to figure out how to hinge it.  The kit provides the roof hatch, but it mounts on a roof section that then gets mounted to the cab.  I assume this is to account for other variants of the Unimog.  But there is no reflecting hatch detail on the cab inner roof.

The kit comes with an engine, but the hood is molded shut and there is no engine bay detail.  So, it is basically a curbside.  I think I will let that be and concentrate on detail in other areas.

Good luck and nice old kit,  I built mine years ago with the first release. Used Prieser fire figure driver. I think I have the hatch working, I'll check it later and let you know how I did it.

   Gerry,

Nice project . A suggestion for the hinge . Would be a small aircraft hinge in nylon. The are used in RC model aircraft for the flaps and ailerons.

They come in many sizes. I have some made by Dubro . I believe?

Sorry for the update delay.   Even though a 30 odd year-old kit, it certainly has a rash of sink marks and ejector pin marks.  Took a lot of clean up to make presentable for primer.

I’ve been working on the clean up of the parts and doing some partial assemblies before primer.  In looking at assembly of the storage “box”, it appeared the visible section needed to be partially assembled as it would be exceedingly difficult to insert post finish without the risk of glue marks being visible.  The downside, of course, is that masking will need be done to get the distinct components painted.  We’ll see if I made the right decision or not.

Here are close up of the hinge I used to make the hatch work. Looks like I used micro doll house hinge and crazy glue.

Those are certainly 2 options I am contemplating.  Next step is primer
