RichCostello Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 I took a "pit-stop" at a truck stop today that had a shelf of die cast cars. Most of them were 1/24 scale, but there was a Welly 68 Olds 442 that looked really nice, but it also looked kind of small. I'm not sure if it looks small because the others are 1/24, or if it's undersize. Just wondering what scale Welly normally does?
Gramps46 Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 Welly does a range of scales from 1/27 to 1/24 and in the last few years have taken to labeling their boxes as such. A lot of the American cars are to the smaller scale.
randyc Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 I *think* Snake may have reviewed the Welly Olds on here. A quick search didn't turn it up, but I know he spoke of it at least and I thought he had photos and review as well. I do know the tires and wheels are an issue. But yes, Welly makes their cars to fit the box and could be from 1/24 to 1/27
Snake45 Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 Yes, I reviewed and Snake-Fu'ed the Welly '68 4-4-2. Here's the writeup, complete with comments and photo comparo with size of the 1/25 AMT '69. The Welly '68 4-4-2, '71 Chevelle convertible, '69 GTO Judge, and '70 GSX are all about the same scale--just under 1/26--and display well together, and look less out of place on a 1/25 shelf than the Monogram 1/24 '70 Chevelle, '69 GTO Judge, and '70 GTX. The same is true of their '65 GTO, which is actually better looking than the old AMT '65 GTO. I recommend all these highly. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/137160-welly-68-4-4-2/
RichCostello Posted February 28, 2020 Author Posted February 28, 2020 The one I saw is bright red with black interior and fender stripe. None of the die-cast cars at this place are in boxes, just sitting out on the shelf. I might have to grab the Olds next time I'm there. They have some pretty cool stuff(51 Chevy sedan w/ drag engine and no front end)but they are 1/24, and look huge next to the Olds.
randyc Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 The loose items displayed like that usually come out of a 4 or 6 pack box. Meant to sell just like that - usually pretty inexpensive, could be aimed at kids or adults. Several posters here have found them at Rite_aid drug stores in places that still have them. I used to have a Rite Aid and at times, you could get them on special and come out pretty cheap on cars. For the most part, they seem to make pretty good base cars for more detailing if you're so inclined. And can live with the scale discrepancies.
