NOBLNG Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 I just sanded the Milliput on the inside of my hood with this stuff. It really worked great on it! So good that I am going to make a couple sanding sticks with it and see how it performs on plastic.
Deuces ll Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Must be something new..... I have a bunch of that 3-M wet or dry sheets that I need to use up....
NOBLNG Posted April 10, 2020 Author Posted April 10, 2020 (edited) It stretches slightly, so I just used it and my fingertips to sand the inside radius on the hood. It didn’t clog at all. It works good on styrene also. I made a sanding stick with it and that did clog when sanding the Milliput. I also have some 3m sanding sheets that are like a 1/8” thick foam in 800, 1200, and 3000 grit. They work great for smoothing areas that have been filed to shape, but they wear out very quickly. peteski Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 These 3M flexible abrasive sheets have been around for few years. Maybe not all hardware stores carry them.
Tom Geiger Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 Since we all have a lot of time these days how about a tutorial? I use regular 3M sandpaper for my work... when my father died and I cleaned out his garage, he had tons of sandpaper. I found an entire beer case full. So I’ve never had to buy any in the last 20 years! Years ago I bought this rotary paper cutter for general office work. It’s one of my favorite tools, I use it for different paper cutting all the time. Do you have the souvenir NNL East / Model Car Garage license plates? The paper parts were all cut on this cutter! I cut the sandpaper into 1 x 1 squares. I find this to be a good size to work with, and I get a lot of these from each standard piece of sandpaper. And it’s efficient use of paper! Previously I’d tear a piece off the sheet and it was pretty wasteful. I keep it all in this little drawer unit that sits on my work bench. A Walmart purchase for less than $10 I made cardboard dividers for the drawers so I get two grits per drawer. Each of the piles was one sheet of sandpaper, and it lasts forever. Hope this is helpful!
peteski Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 (edited) Nice find Tom! Rotary cutter makes chopping it into squares easy and painless, but I'm surprised that the rotary blade doesn't get dull quickly current all that sandpaper. I also hope that you kept some full sheets for those times when you need to sand larger item. Edited April 12, 2020 by peteski

Great for sanding irregular or rounded surfaces (like stair balusters) but do not use this stuff if you want a flat surface. The backing will stretch ever so slightly, and that's not ideal.

Exactly, That is why I stated "flexible abrasive sheets" - not sandpaper. Oh, you might have been thinking about the my reply to Tom Geiger's sandpaper post. There, he was cutting sandpaper (not 3M abrasive film) into small squares. He is the one who went OT with his sandpaper post. Edited April 14, 2020 by peteski
