Tamiya 1/24 Porsche 911 (993) GT2 Speed Yellow

Needed something to get me out of the slump, and social distancing was just the ticket :)

This is a quick box-stock (really took less than 3 days, weekend more or less) build, these Tamiya kits are sure a joy to build. Everything fits so nice. Slightly shelf-worn box - I had this kit for some time.

In the end, the hope was to have something close to this:

Old stash of Zero paints, Giallo modena (naturally), Tamiya white fine primer - go!

Re-scribed the panel lines, cleaned all the parts, wash, dry, two coats of primer:

Two dry color coats, one dry, one wet coat of Dupont Chromaclear.

Left the paint cure overnight, then quick polish to remove couple of dust specs, masked off the trim, painted black + body shell inside:

While the paint was setting, I was busy cleaning up all the small bits. Bunch of suspension parts sprayed in aluminum:

Interior parts and some exterior bits flat black:

Then some detail painting and wash on the suspension parts:

Dampers painted:

Brake disks done:

The rest of the body parts painted black:

Then I switched to the chassis - engine block painted and some wash/detail painted:

Then I masked off and painted the floor:

Aaaand put together everything from the previous few pix:

Next - interior. It is rather spartan in this car, but that only made for a quick assembly. Dashboard:

Seats - decided not to mess with the real belts, just used kit decals which surprisingly look fine:

Then the interior was all put together:

The wheels were painted with Molotow gold marker (I drained the paint out of the marker and sprayed it with airbrush). They turned very good, not the best picture, though:

And finally, windows, wipers, mirrors went on:

And the the little yellow bugger was done!

Cheers!

What an OUTSTANDING build - that paint especially is gorgeous.  I always enjoy your builds and this one’s no exception.

And THREE DAYS?!  Man, it takes me that long to get a body ready to paint ?

Thanks. Yeah, but it was like non-stop model building with bathroom breaks. Everything that has white background os pretty much day one, black background is day two, and then I finished some bits and final assembly day three. Box-stock curbsides are fun and urethane paints are life-savers!

Excellent job!

Extra compliments on your masking of the window trim. That  masking is always a bugger for me. Hard to get perfect. But you have mastered it. What's your secret?

Umm, Tamiya masking tape? I don't know man, there is really no secret. This one actually not perfect, I can't cut the tape as straight as I used to with my hand anymore.

Thanks!

That's what I use as well. Just need more practice I guess!

Thank you. No, it was slammed in stock form! No mods to the kit at all.

Dang that looks really nice.  You guys who can build perfectly clean models make me sick (in a really good way, I'm just jealous ?).

Ha! I just don't know how to weather, so all my cars are clean! Thanks!

Great build and post, Alex!  I am jealous you found 3 solid days to build a kit, and equally jealous you got a nearly perfect clear coat in one pass!

I had it polished a bit, it wasn't really perfect :)

Sitting at home over the weekend, and all home chores done the weekend before. So yeah, gives plenty of time for model building!

Looks really good! Have this in a box painted 10 years ago with bad paint might just start it over now after looking at this! What did you do to the front lights, mine did not look good.

Thanks! Throw this puppy in some iso and get it done! Just kidding. But they do build into nice models. Lights are out of the box - entire kit is.

Looks great!

Awesome to see a legend in the hobby back at it!

Don't you have to die or something to reach that status? :) Appreciate it!

Good to see you have broken out of your slump Alex.

May I ask what paint you used on the brake rotors and for aluminum?

Edgar

Thanks Edgar - used Model Master metalizers for pretty much for all my metal paints.

Alex, another fantastic build and great to watch you work. And at that rate you probably will "build them all".

Ha, one can only hope!
