gks1964 Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 Trying to find out when Nascars top division first began using the dry sump oil system? I've not been able to find any information about this! I figured this is the best place to ask the knowledgeable people here. Thanks, Gerald

john843 Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 I'm sure I remember reading in a recent discussion on this that Ford started using them on the Boss 429's when they became eligible to run in '69 and the ChryCo teams drifted to them pretty much immediately. Petty's flipping RR at Darlington in Apr. '70 had a DS system. John
gks1964 Posted April 14, 2020 Author Posted April 14, 2020 Great pix!! Anyone got any photo's of the '69-'70 Ford or Merc pan and oil tank or any system parts. Gerald

Gerald The ford oil tank was usually behind the drivers seat. The polar light Torino has a dry sump pan for the 429 engine.
john843 Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 Seems like the Ford pan was a 2 pc. unit with the rear 2/3rds constructed of magnesium and the front made of aluminum. Only shot of one I saw didn't show the important part- the bottom:( https://www.talladegaspoilerregistry.com/2014/04/07/what-are-you-working-on-rick-and-kjell-team-up/ John

DoctorLarry Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 Here are shots from a 68 bot not Boss 9. Appears to be wet sump as well.

yellowsportwagon Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 Those are the best so far. Those flat Holman Moody headers would be awesome to have in scale.
Bill J Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 Here is the Chrysler 426 dry sump pan. That clunky looking bit on the side is the Mopar made pump.
gks1964 Posted April 15, 2020 Author Posted April 15, 2020 Thanks everybody!! If anyone has a photo of it off the engine post it. Gerald
MarkJ Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 They did use oil cooler radiators before then though. At least the 63 Ray Fox Chevy did. Front left corner underhood is oil cooler radiator and remote oil filter.
