Something I've seen referenced here quite a bit is an "annual" kit.

I've seen them mentioned but have never heard what they are.

What is an annual and what doe it signify? Is it any different than a standard kit from the same year?

Posted

Many years ago, mostly in the mid '50's, the modeling companies would offer kits of the current year model cars and in some cases pick-ups. This was also a time when many of the American car manufactures would have Promo type models as sales promotional items. The kits that you would buy became known as "Annuals" since every year they would become models of the latest year model. At that time the thought of offering reissues years later just wasn't something even considered.

The '60s and '70s, too. The kits were based on the promos that they made for the car companies.

This quote "annual" thing really started in 1958, when AMT and SMP actively started selling kits of the new 1958 cars based off of that year's promos. This proved to be highly popular. Soon JoHan joined the fray. And later MPC. Soon after 1958, kits started being slightly modified from the promos. Adding details like engines and other things. Light trucks, mainly pickup trucks were also added soon after. But, basically annuals were just kits of that year's latest cars and trucks.

In many cases, if the real car or truck didn't change that much from the year before, the model company would modify the mold to represent the latest year's offering. If a major change happened, a new tool would be made, and we'd maybe see old retired annual tool reissued if they were popular enough. But, these reissues are not considered annuals, because they are put when the real is out new. That modifying the of tool until a major change was needed, is why we see things like AMT's '66 Buick Wildcat, and not the similar '65 reissued from time to time. The '66 was the last year the tool could be used for the latest version of that car. And it came from the the original '65 model tooling. In some cases, if the car is popular enough we'd see something like what AMT eventually did to their '67 Corvette Sting Ray kits. And retool them back to a '63 version. But, other than that Vette, I can't think of any others. Some cars are so popular, new tools will be made of them years later.

But, annuals themselves are just kits of cars and trucks that were put out the year the real cars and trucks were out. This basically keep going through the 1980's as MPC kept making promos for the real car manufacturers each year. And slowly died about the time the decade ended. There have been a few contemporary models of cars since then. But not many.

This is a great start with information about what was offered. If you could it might be even more helpful if the year model you're mentioning is included. The above mentioned Buick models remind me of buying both the Hardtop and the Convertible issued of the '56 year model. Some of the earliest Annuals that I remember from JoHan were '56 Dodge and Oldsmobile but neither of them had interiors and were based on the use of a "Friction Motor" mounted on a flat sheet metal frame.

Espo, each of his posts is for one specific year. The one you quoted is all of the 1958 AMT and SMP annual kits.  His next post was all of the 1959 annuals, and the third post was all of the 1960 annuals. A great resource and a lot of work.

Thanks, What I wanted Scott to know that they go back even further in what was offered. I may have not made myself plan enough on that and I'm sorry if anyone gets annoyed with me, I seem to have that effect sometimes.

Vince already pointed that out to me. I guess I missed that you had stated the year on each of these lists. What I wanted to do is share with you the information about some of the earlier Promos that were offered is all.

No they don't. The first year individual kits were offered in 1/25 scale was 1958. Before that there were sets of 3 unbuilt promos, or the 1/32 scale kits AMT and Revell marketed together in 1955 and '56. 1958 is considered the first true year of what is considered "annual" kits.

That's it for today. I'll pickup where I left off tomorrow. This is a big task. In some ways bigger than I expected. But, that's okay. I'm enjoying myself. I'm finding it both fun and interesting. I'm sure there are some mistakes. But, I'm working with some of the best resources out there.

Are you prepared to do the MPC and Johan annuals as well Scott? :)

You've got a lot of typing to do!

Interesting. So when did the practice of Annual kits stop?

Definitely couldn't imagine any kit manufacturer going through the cost and expense of even one annual kit these days.

On a somewhat related note, what about the dealer promo kits?

I know that GM were doing them until the mid-90s, as I have a number of them. Is that around when the promo kit died?

Wow you guys really stirred up the memory banks, I built several of those starting in 58 till about 65. Then I was old enough to start branching off into classic cars and other kinds of builds. Built the Big T and Deuce also. Many more memories, too many to talk about.
