unclescott58 Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 This in someways this is a terrible kit. Yet I kind of like it, and the way it turned out. It's Lindberg's old F-94C Starfire. If your looking accuracy and detail this is not the kit for you. I bought in a Lindberg Value Pack, which included the almost as equally bad F-80C Shooting Star. I knew what I getting into when I bought these kits. But, they were cheap and fun quick builds. Something to take me back to my days of childhood, when I didn't know any better. Plus I mainly bought the kit for the Shooting Star. A plane I like much better than the Starfire. And is an okay kit by comparison. I purchased, and almost right away built the Shooting Star a little over a year ago. Since I'm not a big fan of the Starfire, and low level of accuracy with that kit in particular, I wait until now to build it. Again, I'm kind of happy with the end results. One problem I had in painting the kit, was in painting the flat black area in front of the windscreen. I had a little bleed through under the tape, Tamiya no less, I used for the masking. I used a technique I've learned from watching HPIGuy on YouTube. I just touched up the edge with a silver Sharpie. Free hand. It turned out pretty good. And Sharpie a perfect match to the silver paint I had used. I wish every model fix was that simple. And simple is the whole point of this build. Again, simple, cheap, and fun.
Snake45 Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Congratulations on getting that wretched old backbirth together. Every time I've opened that box, I've run away gagging.

stavanzer Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 Beauty of a Build, Scott. That is indeed a sad, old kit. Hard to believe that for over 50 years it was the ONLY 1/48 Scale F-94. You did good work.

Hard_2_Handle_454 Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 I've been wanting to get a F-94 for my collection for awhile.
Vietnam Vet67 Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 (edited) Love the early straight wing jets...................before they went to swept wing after seeing all the German data. The plane in the middle is the actual jet the model was made from. See also post below this one. Tail number ending in 0966. Edited May 19, 2020 by Vietnam Vet67
Vietnam Vet67 Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 Here is the actual plane that your model was made from.................tail number 0966.
Mike999 Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 Great job on that old turkey of a kit! It's good to see that Round 2 is still getting some mileage (and money) from those ancient molds. The F-94 may have been involved in an early Stealth Aircraft project. Watching an old sci-fi movie recently, the aircraft that took off to intercept the flying saucers were F-94's. But by the time they got to altitude, they had magically turned into F-86's. ? I guess that shows the dangers of using stock footage, and maybe having an editor who can't tell one airplane from another. Here's a short, fun article by master modeler Cookie Sewell, about building his Lindberg F-94 at age 7: https://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/lin/kit_lin_70554.shtml
Snake45 Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 Not to hijack your thread, Scott, but might be semi-relevant. I've got a bunch of these old crock kits from the '50 from Lindberg, Aurora, Revell, Hawk, etc. I'm thinking of doing them up as "desk models." Awhile back, Polar Lights was offering the old Aurora clear plastic airplane display stands, and I bought I think 10 of them. I'm hoping to do a series of '50s airplane models, built gear-up, all surface detail sanded off, like the old solid wood or resin manufacturer desk models, and put them on these stands. The series would include the Lindberg P-47N and F4U-5 Corsair, Aurora P-51H, Hawk F2H Banshee and F-84E (and maybe F-104), Lindberg F4D Skyray, F7U Cutlass, F-86A, and so forth. Maybe even that backbirth Lindberg F-94 (I also have a Revell F-94)! Paint jobs will be simple, mainly overall silver or overall Glossy Sea Blue for the USN airplanes. What do you think?
stavanzer Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 Snake, that sounds like a great Plan. The best use of those kits, and it "Should" give the satisfaction of some quick, simple builds. (note, I did not say "Easy Builds". Unless you forgo all the sanding smooth work. Then they might get closer to "Easy Builds") Have Fun.

Both are similar to stories that many of us have.

Greg Myers Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 Nice to see them reissuing these old kits. Even more so seeing a good clean build thanks Scot
bisc63 Posted July 16, 2020 Posted July 16, 2020 Have you tried the Hobby Craft F-94A or B? Decent kits, and way better than this C model!

Could also believe that the editor or producer believed that the audience (kids and teens) "wouldn't know the difference. I don't have the time or money to match stock footage - just get this picture out to the drive-ins!" Edited July 28, 2020 by Reegs

Madhatter Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 wow - you don't see many of these planes online - even in the aircraft dedicated sites. I've never build a Lindberg kit (although am seriously eyeing off their Auburn Speedster kit under the name Pyro) and from everything Ive read, you have made a silk purse from a pigs ear. The plane itself reminds me of something Gerry Anderson might use in one of those shows. Definitely a plane of its era. I'm quite partial to the Shooting Star myself I see you also have a Vanship in that pile - did you make it or is it to be made? Great work! Si

You asked about the Vanship. No, I have not got to it yet. Too many other things, mainly car models, keep getting moved in front of it. I do love the design. And do need to build it someday.
stavanzer Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 So, Snake? Any news on the "desktop" builds?
