STYRENE-SURFER Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 While searching around for another Altered/Gasser type build project, one with enough photo documentation this time LOL. I found this BARN find drag car ('57 Corvette). Probably raced in the late 60's early 70's. Only photos, no real info of the owner/driver etc. Lots of nice detail pics however. The only photo of it with the engine (Ford big block) yes you read that correctly. Some kind of high rise without carburetors. Can only lead me to think that is injection of some sort but have never seen anything like it before especially on this vintage. Can anyone shed some light on this oddity? Quote
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 (edited) I'd pretty much bet the farm it's a 2X4 carb manifold, with a fabbed big 2-pot mechanical injection system. Not too hard to do in reality. Stu Hilborn introduced his mechanical FI in 1948. By the time the car in this post was built, it was a popular and well understood setup, with other manufacturers doing similar things. So Hilborn or similar guts adapted to fabricated throttle bodies would have been straightforward. Big 2-pot systems were widely seen on blown drag engines too, so the only real trick would be throttle linkage and machining the bodies and butterflies. This is an Offenhauser FE 2X4 manifold. EDIT: Yup. FORD FE 427 SHELBY COBRA GALAXIE HIGH RISE ORIGINAL 2X4 INTAKE MANIFOLD Note how tall the rib at the rear carb-mount corner of the Ford manifold is. Compare that to the manifold in your photo. I think we have a winner. Edited May 17, 2020 by Ace-Garageguy Quote

Deuces ll Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 Might be a "Buddy Bar" Ford intake with a home-made Hilborn style 2-port mechanical injector setup.... Quote

Force Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 Yes it looks to be the 427 high riser manifold, it's the tallest made from the factory. Quote
STYRENE-SURFER Posted May 17, 2020 Author Posted May 17, 2020 Bill, Guido... thanks for the info, much appreciated. i've sent an pm to a moderator about my double post issue so hopefully can have them merged together. Quote

Casey Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 Is this the intake manifold found in the Revell '64 Ford Thunderbolt kits, or is that a shorter manifold? Quote

The injectors are odd but could be easily fabbed/scratch built. 4 hours ago, Force said: Yes it looks to be the 427 high riser manifold, it's the tallest made from the factory. I've got to look at my Tasca Ford '64 T Bolt kit. For some reason I can't help myself being fascinated with 427 powered cars. 2 hours ago, Casey said: Is this the intake manifold found in the Revell '64 Ford Thunderbolt kits, or is that a shorter manifold? I think so, gunna take a look at that part tonight. Have that kit in my stash now. Norm Veber from R&M was kind enough to send me that kit in exchange for the 427 supercharger manifold master I created Along with some other nice goodies...Super nice guy! I have a file of pics of this Corvette drag car online that some may find interesting here https://public.fotki.com/kdnelsurf/corvette-project/ Let me know if you can see these, it's my fotki thingy. Muncie Posted May 18, 2020 Posted May 18, 2020 Interesting project, thank you for posting the link to the Corvette pictures. AKA "the flying toilet" - The throttle body installs in place of a carburetor on a regular manifold and the injectors are installed in the manifold runners near the cylinder heads. Requires regular mechanical fuel injection pump and plumbing. Hers's a set from Ron's Fuel Injection Systems - http://ronsfuel.com/flying_toilet.cfm Quote
STYRENE-SURFER Posted May 18, 2020 Author Posted May 18, 2020 Hey, thanx Steve. flying toilet, now I'm cracking up ? sorry, pun. there are some neat vintage details in those pics among them is the thingy they used for the hood leash. that sure looks to be an old retractable clothesline piece. Quote
STYRENE-SURFER Posted June 14, 2020 Author Posted June 14, 2020 yup, looks like I might have a possible next new project that won't be to hard to collect parts for. more here https://public.fotki.com/kdnelsurf/corvette-project/ Quote
