Italianhorses Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 Since I finished with Miata, time to pick another quick box stock to keep the ball rolling. I have a few kits that I do want to build and put on the shelf, but I don't want to superdetail or spend way too much time on them - so these Tamiya box-stockers are perfect way to do just that. This is another Nissan that I have built close to 20 years ago when I just started getting hooked on these Tamiya kits, and it also did suffer at the hands of my nephews long time ago and was blown to bits probably at some point. Time to build another one. IMG_1601 by Italian Horses, on Flickr When I buy kits that were re-issued at some point, I always try to get an original release - for the history of it first, and the fact that molds are usually much better than subsequent re-releases. The only case where that might not be the best way to go is with older race cars, where original decals might be a problem - they usually do deteriorate over time. This one doesn't have many decals, thank fully. Just like I like it - original Tamiya release of 1989 in a grey bottom box with original catalogs, crinkly tamiya plastic, yellowed instruction sheet and that unforgettable smell of a 90-s kit! IMG_1602 by Italian Horses, on Flickr The kit is curbside, rather simple, but that is not the point here. S13 is a legend, and look at that shape! 80-s minimalism at its finest! IMG_1604 by Italian Horses, on Flickr Will be painted factory Bluish Silver with gun-metal skirts. Wish me luck!

Cleaned up all the parts and washed them to prep for primer and paint: Painted the body. Bluish Silver metallic with gunmetal skirts. Not polished yet. Love the color!
beeRS Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 Very nice. Is that an standard automotive laquer paint you've used or one you mixed yourself? Gloss looks pretty good. Did you use a clear coat?

Gloss looks pretty good. Did you use a clear coat? Thanks! This is actually decanted Tamiya TS58 light pearl blue mixed with TS30 silver leaf 2:1. Model Master gunmetal for the skirts. 2K clear, yes. Its not polished yet, so got a bit of a texture.
Funkychiken Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 If my 2k came out like that, I wouldnt touch it again, great paint finish!

beeRS Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 That moulded in exhaust, engine and trans didn't look great at first, but after your detail painting, you wouldn't know it was moulded as one piece! Underside looks perfect now.

Picking the color for S13 was easy - seemingly it was offered in gray, or... dark gray. jchrisf Posted May 27, 2020 Posted May 27, 2020 Wow! Perfection again (as usual). I hope I can build this great someday. What is your secret for laying down smooth decanted Tamiya paint on the body?

No secret really... its just like any other paint. Technically, its just lacquer, so it would be no different from Zero, etc On 5/27/2020 at 7:12 AM, Scalper said: Nice work so fare.. great job on the paint. the masking. ect Thank you. Time to finish this one. S13 has a pretty complex optics, but Tamiya gave it all as a simple one-piece, had to sweat a bit to paint that "silvia" logo. Turned out fine in the end. Rich Chernosky Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 Very Nice Alex...another winnner from your stable. What do you use to spray the black trim. My "go to" is Tamiya X-18 aribrushed. Water base on lacquer makes mistakes clean easily. I wholeheartedly agree that doing a quick project like this keeps the modeling mojo going. Tamiya is my "go to" as well.
jchrisf Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 (edited) Unbelievable build... It looks real.. great job! Edited May 28, 2020 by jchrisf
89AKurt Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 Of course, another perfect build! Great job on the light lenses. I've masked for window trim on some projects, makes a huge difference. I'm trying to remember what US market had for headlights, not that.

Slightly different body style, and front/rear fascias.
beeRS Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 Well done Alex. This looks superb - as I have now come to expect from you!
