My 65 custom 500 just needs too much body work that I do not want to do so I bought this 65 Mercury that only needs quarter repairs,it has a fresh but never fired 390 and has a unusual 3 speed on the column with overdrive. This is going to be the old car I drive on long distance trips.

With an Overdrive this should make a great long distance cruiser. This is an unusual transmission for a car built at that time period, the reason being most were going to the 4-speeds that had become very popular then. That year model Mercury could even be ordered with a 4 on the floor. I have owned several earlier model Fords with the Overdrive, and it will work in second gear as well. Mine had a switch under the gas pedal that would disengage the overdrive if you floored it to pass someone. Then let up on the gas and you will hear and often feel the Overdrive reengage.

Just last year I sold my 63 Ford Country Sedan wagon with a 352 3spd and OD. Even though it has a governor make sure to keep the handle pulled out (turned off) unless you are on the highway. We have a lot of 35 and 45 speed zones with traffic lights and it can get a little confused in those situations. Out on the highway - no problem. Enjoy!

Gave it a quick bath and found that the crank pulley and most of the bolts for the front of the engine are missing so a trip to the local old junkyard will happen soon, rear springs are sagging and found the old springs from a 65 Country Squire I had a few years ago to put in it.

Why would the Crank Pully be missing ? I take it this wasn't driven home.

The O/D was a very rare option by then. I didn't think it was even being offered. The '55 Dodge I just bought has overdrive.

That'll be a very nice car when you're done.

All new brakes and has about 80 miles on it so far,the o/d is not working and most likely electrical since it will go in free wheeling with the cable pushed in but no o/d.
