Just got my first bottle the other day. The directions on the bottle say do not apply over enamel. Am I reading that right?

Do I need to put a clear coat over any enamel painted part I want to use the panel line accent on?

Thank you.

Yeah, that's right, it will destroy the enamel just like putting solvent on it. I tested it on enamel and lacquer paint and it messed both up.  I only use it on acrylic paints, so maybe if you clear coated with a acrylic clear it might work.  Might want to test it first.

A couple of alternatives are using mineral spirits with artist oil paints thinned down to make a wash or liner or...another product I really like is Flory water based washes.  They are made of clay, so they don't react with any paint. You just slop it on, wait for it to dry then remove the excess with a paper towel moistened with water, or in my case, spit.

I also use the panel line accent on chrome for washes. Grills, hubcaps, trim pieces, etc. Like everything else, there's a learning curve. Here, I used it on the hubcaps of my work truck. Sometimes multiple applications are needed.

Never used the Tamiya Accent over enamel or lacquer, but always under it with no problems. After scribing door and trunk lines, I add it to the deepened lines, right to the bare plastic. After it dries, excess is removed with Tamiya enamel thinner. Shouldn’t be a lot of cleanup as the Accent flows nicely into the grooves by capillary action. Sometimes a second or third application will get the lines really dark. Then I do all my priming and painting. The accent still will show through. These bodies have the Accent treatment.

Brutalform, those bodies look great. The panel lines look awesome.

I was asking about the accent more for using on engines and drivetrain components. I wanted to paint them first, then use the panel accent to add depth. I use testor's enamels, guess I will have to look at adding a clear coat over the enamel before the accent.

If you have access to a war game shop that sells Citadel paints (Warhammer) than they have a huge range of water based washes and “contrast colours” that will apply over pretty much any paint without affecting it. You can get dark washes in black or black-brown, but also in a variety of “colours” to suit different body hues... so you can use a midnight blue or deep green to avoid the starkness of black lines but still give effective shading...

best,

I wish I had been smart enough to read the label. It basically dissolved the paint off of some brake calipers that I painted with Testors enamel.

I have used the Tamiya Accent paint on engines, chrome and chassis and drive line components  and have been happy with the results. The only thing is I use almost Tamiya paints only and this may be the difference.

For the most part yes. I use the TS line of spray paints and they don't really state on the can weather or not it's Acrylic that I can see. The brush bottle paints are Acrylic  thou.

Once distribution happens there will be bottled lacquers from Tamiya. They will be LP-XXX numbers. Mixing Tamiya X-18 with their thinner X-20 makes a good wash for all paints. If you do use Panel Accent and get too much, wipe the brush dry and put it back in pane line and it will draw the excess back out. The Citadel stuff is good if you can find it.

Interesting.

Chris (YouTube channel "hpiguys") uses Tamiya black pane accent as a wash in a lot of his build reviews.

He does use it on chrome plated parts that he has sprayed clear matt over.  Doesn't seem to have a problem.  Usually he is using Rustoleum 2X Matt Clear (which I thought was enamel, but maybe not), and hasn't had a problem.

Here's a video where he as done that matt clear and the the Tamiya black panel accent:

You can see in this video how he has applied the Tamiya black panel accent to the headlight areas (which were clear coated with a matt clear spray paint ) and it hasn't destroyed the finish.

I just sprayed some Salvinos JR chrome wheels (the same wheels as in the kit shown in the YouTube video) with Testors Dullcote # 1260 (Lacquer) and was hoping to just dip a toothpick tip into the Tamiya black panel accent and "touch" it to the holes in the wheels.

So is it just pure "enamel" that it "eats"  ?

I'm doing a little test tonight.

I took a chrome plated wheel from one of my kits -- I sprayed it with Testors Dullcote (lacquer).  Tomorrow I'll throw some Tamiya black panel line on it and see what happens.

Stay tuned ...

This is strange:  not sure how it happened but this thread somehow appeared on my phone the other day, and I hadn't even been searching for anything related to panel lines or washes.  Too bad it didn't show up about a week ago, as that would've prevented me from ordering three of these (black, gray and brown). I use mostly enamels and some lacquers.  I've got a few acrylics but they're rarely my go-to paints.

Makes me wonder why a model products giant like Tamiya would make something that only works with acrylics when they make lacquer sprays.  I wonder if it occurred to them that not all modelers use their paints on bodies, and might like to have a more universal panel line wash.
