speedy5963 Posted September 9, 2020 Posted September 9, 2020 What's good all, along with a number of other builds, jumped into this one, similar to the Dodge pickup i'm working on, this is another I probably would have never guessed I'd be building one day! My lady friend's father owned a Gremlin, it was his first new car, we chatted about it one evening, had some good laughs but they liked it and it had some value to them so I decided to build him a model of it. I ordered the kit last week and it arrived yesterday, spent a good amount of time last night sanding/filing on the interior tub and chassis to get the fit a lot better, out of the box it was awful as you can see in the pic below. I've got it sitting a lot better, not perfect but I also do not want to sand through a few areas. The build is going to be relatively stock, I've only got a few pics to go by and it is a surprise for him so I can't ask him too many questions regarding it. I had a friend mix up the medium blue for me at his paint shop based off the pics and color codes we found online, should be a fun little build, nothing fancy and so far nothing has fit well, lol!
landman Posted September 9, 2020 Posted September 9, 2020 I have one as well and I'd like to use it to replicatemine which was a '73. Flinstone makes a 72 which is sort of the same The only hurdle is the decals.
bisc63 Posted September 9, 2020 Posted September 9, 2020 Love the Cragars on a Gremlin! That chassis looks like it was made for a completely different car, what is up with that odd angle to the rear frame; it should flatten to the the floor pan?!

Nice, definitely fun trying to replicate some of these cars with what is available! 23 minutes ago, bisc63 said: Love the Cragars on a Gremlin! The more I started looking at images, there are some sweet Gremlins out there. The frame is awful, if I wasnt building this to replicate someone's, I'd be chopping into this!
StevenGuthmiller Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 I had a buddy in high school that was a Gremlin freak! You would never know it by looking at his large frame and rough looks, but he owned at least a couple of them while in high school and shortly after. As you might imagine, he was the butt of many jokes in school, but I admired him for not caving in to the peer pressure and sticking to his guns. He was especially proud of the Gremlin X "Levis Edition" that he owned. He has since passed on, but I'll always remember him as "Gremlin Marty". Steve
landman Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 In the photo above with the pup tent we were at Cayuga Raceway(Today Toronto Motorsports Park) for a weekend of drag racing in 1974. We saw all the big names of the day, like Connie Calitta, Grumpy, Garlits, Shirley Muldowney, Gary Beck and many more. Seems like 100 years ago.

That phot has some great subject matter for other vehicles as well. Is that a Dodge A100 with a camper shell I see in the background?
David G. Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 Looks like you're off to a great start! David G.
Dave Van Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 The kit shows it's age a bit in the fit dept. But I am a AMC guy and was thrilled to get the Gremlin back! I made a few mods that made things fit and look better. I ground off the area's in black. The ejection pin marks and frame rail tops. This allowed the interior to sit lower and thus the body I then added plastic strip to the chassis sides. IIRC they were around 3/16 but check on your own model for exact size. These little mods and small inner fenders on the rear nelped a lot. Thanks

Steve Sorry to hear about your buddy, I can see where the car could grow on you, I've seen some really nice 1:1's built up as I've been looking at photos online and I read about the X Levi edition, pretty cool! 4 hours ago, landman said: In the photo above with the pup tent we were at Cayuga Raceway(Today Toronto Motorsports Park) for a weekend of drag racing in 1974. See a lot of potential and ideas in the kit itself though! 2 hours ago, landman said: It does have the right shape doesn't it? That is the definition we got with our Instamatic back in the day. Yeah, it has been growing on me for sure, have some ideas for some future builds with this kit!
espo Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 I like the Gremlin and I'm sure your friends Dad will also. Great gift since it sounds like he's a car guy also.

Yeah, hopefully it will look very similar to the 1:1 he had in the pic above in initial thread. Here is the color I got made up

Bainford Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 That’s looking good. The colour matches well.

c-groupie Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 (edited) hello- just a newbe here but sold auto parts for over forty years. currently trying to build a randell 401 from this kit . just a couple of things i noticed , this thing won't stop . kit does not have a brake master cylinder or booster . also looks like the gremlin went to electric wipers starting in 1974 . kit has a motor on center firewall , but be sure to remove vacuum portion of fuel pump . KEEP MODELING !!! Edited February 11, 2021 by c-groupie
Mike F. Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 I'm currently working on this same kit. Going to be black metal flake over candy lime green. I don't want to highjack your thread, but here are some progress pics. I'll probably start a thread of my own soon. Looking forward to see yours to completion.

I know what you are dealing with concerning the chassis fit. Dealing with that on mine now. Are there stripes on the one you are building this tribute to? If so, I cannot see them. Sun glare? Keep on going, it looks great
Mike F. Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 As the kit does not have a brake cylinder & power assist, are you planning to add? If so, where from?

Thank you all for the comments, I really need to jump back on this thing, I'm not looking to do too much more than get this to hopefully come together well, the reference pics I have are the best I have and my friend was very small and has no recollection of the car so I'm just going off those pics, I believe it did have the stripes, hard to see in pics of the pic but you can slightly see them. I do want to build another one of these down the road, really clean it up into a nice street car but, we'll see if we can get through this one build! Good looking build above as well and no worries on posting pics, always welcome!
