Paul Payne Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 Does anyone make egg crate grille material thick enough to file into complex curves and shapes? I found this picture on line but scratchbuilding this grille would be daunting- I have no idea how I would even start. Any ideas appreciated!
Paul Payne Posted October 4, 2020 Author Posted October 4, 2020 After a lot of thought, I am going to try Evergreen structural shapes for something similar to what is pictured.
Lunajammer Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 I would check the model railroad catalogs. I've purchased plastic grids and catwalks and/or fencing that have made nice automotive grills.
Paul Payne Posted October 29, 2020 Author Posted October 29, 2020 Lunajammer, I discovered some Evergreen structural shapes I am experimenting with. I tried the model railroad suppliers but what I found didn't have enough depth to contour. Right now I am laminating these together (WF sections) flat to flat and edge to edge. Laminating layers of the items you mention would probably work too, just didn't think of it. I will post pictures when I get a minute......
Paul Payne Posted November 15, 2020 Author Posted November 15, 2020 Please go to work in progress- egg crate grille and the car behind it- to see pictures of progress on this project. Thanks everyone for looking.
keyser Posted November 15, 2020 Posted November 15, 2020 Check kitchen strainers. The square pattern is seen in some and has curve that could help. Smaller ones like lemon sized. Tea strainer too. Wish someone would do Buick YJob. I believe that’s Harley Earls 39 caddy proto drawing.
Paul Payne Posted November 16, 2020 Author Posted November 16, 2020 Keyser, looks like you are from a Welsh village- addressing envelopes must be time consuming with the possibility of running out of room. When I first wanted to tackle this, I looked a strainers and other mesh, but decided that they would not offer the depth I wanted. I think the rendering is a Harley Earl design study, not sure it is quite as early as 39- maybe mid 40's? The Buick Y job is on my list as well- maybe Moebius would tackle this one- or perhaps a 3D printed one?
Claes Ericsson Posted November 16, 2020 Posted November 16, 2020 (edited) Robert Burns does a partial Y-job. Body, hood, bumpers & grille. He's on facebook as "Too many projects" and if you scroll way down in his gallery, you'll find these pics: Edited November 16, 2020 by Claes Ericsson
Paul Payne Posted November 16, 2020 Author Posted November 16, 2020 That looks really good- I assume it is 1/25th or 1/24th scale? Shouldn't be hard to fit a chassis and engine, as well as the interior.
Claes Ericsson Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 Doing an approximate measure of the wheelbase, it seems to scale out to 1/24. AMT 34 Fords in the background.
