bill-e-boy Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 I measured the T frame and wheel base is 99mm. I them mocked up the A guards with the Lil John chassis and got a measurement of 106mm so I will need to stretch the frame by that amount. I ended up by gluing on a piece of 3x1.5mm rectangular on which I had picked up the rear cross member and shock mounting tabs. I then relocated the mounting points for the rear end radius rods. The rear tubular cross member will be replaced by some 1.6mm round stock as it mounts the disc brake calipers This should put the tires into the rear fenders better. I will need to work on the splash apron as the front wheels need to be moved forward by about 1mm Pix shows modified frame in front of assemble Lil John chassis
Kit Karson Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Love watching things coming together! There is even chatter on fb regarding this thread!! Keep up the great work and As for my project, I've updated the rims. Now going with the sawtooth rims & tires from the Revell 1937 Ford Convertible and Trailer. And, here's why: (It sure wasn't because I didn't have another set of 5 spokes & tires) but you may have already figured out the reason was because I'm adding a trailer! When I start cutting things up, I'll bring y'all up to date with step-by-step construction, OK? btw I found this axle & parallel leaf springs (unidentified donor) for under the box & rear fenders: Kleaned up, nicely, but needs the drop in the axles reduced: Work continues on...
tim boyd Posted June 30, 2021 Posted June 30, 2021 Kit....don't have a kit to pull out right now, but that axle and parallel leaves setup looks to me like the one from the Monogram 1939 Chevy Coupe/Sedan Delivery kits....and I like those period wheels you chose, too...TIM 1

Keeping with the original intent of this thread, builders from around the world are keeping up with the umpteen pages and awesome comments and commitment to build a personal '29 PU while @tim boydis watching over your shoulder! As for an update on mine, added a strip of styrene to the bottom edges of the hood: Now, a little lift job for the cowl... -KK
tim boyd Posted July 14, 2021 Posted July 14, 2021 Guys...I am posting this here as the people reading this thread will be more able to relate than the general audience in the other forum sections... ******************** Many of you may remember the name Bill Burnham and his famous "Old Blue" 1929 Ford Highboy Roadster. Way back to 1982, when I found out I was being job transferred to the Bay Area of California, I connected with fellow Street Rodder Columnist "In Bill's Eyes" columnist Bill Burnham. Bill immediately took me under his hot rodding arm, introducing me to his fellow "Danville Dukes" (Gary Meadors, Steve Moal, et al) and this made this midwestern boy feel immediately a part of the west coast hot rodding scene. (N.B., soon thereafter, Roy Brizio also welcomed me to the NorCal rodders fold...) Over a year later, Bill called me to tell me that he and his wife were going to be in Nevada during the weekend of 1983 Andy (Brizio's) Picnic, and would I like to drive his Highboy to the event since they would be gone? Can you say "yes!!!!"? Anyway, here is a photo taken by the event photographer showing me driving Old Blue into the Andy's Picnic event. That's even Bill's jacket I'm wearing. Bill's prior highboy, a bright yellow '29 on '32 with a 326 Pontiac, which made the cover of a couple of hot rod pubs in the early 1980's, inspired one of my very first street rod models. Being able to drive the successor car in real life was one of those "you can't make this stuff up" events in my life. Sadly, Bill passed away around 1995, but his grandson often drives Old Blue to hot rod events to this day, and the Burnham family remains heavily involved in the NorCal hot rod world. Enjoy the picture; I sure grin when it makes it to the top of my picture files....TIM 3
bill-e-boy Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Tim - I remember always looking forward to reading the column in Street Rodder - Bill was a good story teller On with my build - I was not happy with the Revell take on the finned oil pan on the motor. I can se how this came about due to the shape of the motor as it was moulded in two halves with the oil pan incorporated with the motor. Answer was to machine up a block of plastic to represent the fins and to glue that ono the motor and shape it up. Un fortunately the Cobra script got sanded off in the shaping process. Pix are of milling the fins and the motor with fins added Milling the fins The chassis is now in primer and waiting for some small additional filling waiting to dry before final sand The next on the list was a colour - not happy with a clone pink - times have moved on from the 80/90's Looked at the new lacquer options from Tamiya and nothing turned my crank other than a dark blue metallic so I got some but still not overly happy. I dug out my stash of old Testers enamels and found a few bottles of Boyds Pacific Blue - that ticks a few boxes - Boyd Coddington the famous billet rod builder, colour choice period perfect and the enamel medium suits the time period So next step finishing prep work on the chassis and getting some colour laid down thanks for looking 1
tim boyd Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 Bill....Colors by Boyd (Coddington) Pacific Blue...truly a period-perfect choice (and one that still looks cool today, too). TIM
Kit Karson Posted July 28, 2021 Posted July 28, 2021 WOW! This has become a thread for everyone here on the MCM Forum to follow! And, history pics from @tim boydhave raised the bar and added yet another degree of inspiration! Slipped up to my lair and spent a bit of time on the kooler: Found a interesting muffler in the Revell '30 Model A Woody Ford logo indented into the muffler Well, it'll look kool in the side of the kooler, right? Dragging the back edge of the #11 to open up the side of the kooler Opened up the side Fits pretty close Add a little CA Now for a little klean up Should look pretty good... -KK 1
Kit Karson Posted August 1, 2021 Posted August 1, 2021 Just about finished with the oval insert... Turned out just as smooth as a baby's butt! -KK
tim boyd Posted August 1, 2021 Posted August 1, 2021 (edited) K.....where did the cooler come from? Obviously, and this really goes without saying, your attention to detail (subbing in the Ford muffler logo) is the kind of precise attention to detail that I love looking at in a model car project, just as much as the radical mods and incredible wiring detail seen in some of the other build styles in this diverse hobby of ours. Bill....same thought goes with the ribbed oil pan in your post a few spots back up the page.... Best to you both....TB Edited August 1, 2021 by tim boyd 1
Kit Karson Posted August 1, 2021 Posted August 1, 2021 Revell Gone Fishing Set Revell BASS BUSTERS Set Revell Yamaha Formula One Team Cut to fit under the box Trimmed to fit Mock up What do you think, so far? Kind of a side view of the two together Have to cut down the tongue and cut off the forward running boards & front fenders And attach a proper hitch under the bed Oh, finish the trailer suspension, too btw thanks for watching -KK
bill-e-boy Posted August 2, 2021 Posted August 2, 2021 Kit - like what you are doing with the trailer Tim - thanks for kind words have been busy with another project but managed to get some colour onto the chassis and motor and bits and pieces. Clear coat as well. Here they are sweating it out in my hot box !! The other project is this The spray booth is almost done so I can go back to some modeling. It has been one of those bucket list things to get done - I have been collecting bits for a while so the only thing left to do is to incorporate the hot box below the spray booth part 2
Kit Karson Posted August 2, 2021 Posted August 2, 2021 Awesome to see what others are doing! Here's the progress on the '29 PU trailer... Trimmed out the excess original frame work... Added the new framing... Test fit the axle & leaf springs... Need to kreate the forward shackle mounts... Drill a couple of alignment holes... Shortened the rear spring mounts. And, locate the mounting points on all four korners! Now, where do the running boards need to be cut off? -KK
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted August 2, 2021 Posted August 2, 2021 Wow! I missed a few things while I haven't been here. Nice work as always to all involved! -RRR
Dennis Lacy Posted August 3, 2021 Author Posted August 3, 2021 @Kit Karson Man, you’re putting just as much work into the trailer as the truck itself. Love the grafted in Ford emblem. With that giant cooler there’s plenty of room for all the needed gear and cold suds for a trip to the NSRA Nationals! @tim boyd That’s so bitchin that Bill let you take Old Blue for a weekend. That smile on your face says it all! Street Rodder was never the same without his monthly column. He definitely had a great way of putting things! While I’m in here, check this out, guys! The other night I came across a 1986 ad for Boyd’s wheels shared by his widow, Jo Coddington, on her Instagram. Check out the wheel design at the upper left. The very same directional Boyd wheel Monogram rendered in the original and second release of their ‘37 Sedan street rod kit AND the same wheel that Tim and I used on our ‘29 Pickup Models! 1
Zippi Posted August 3, 2021 Posted August 3, 2021 I've been following your build and it's really turning out to be a slick looking little ride. 1
Kit Karson Posted August 3, 2021 Posted August 3, 2021 Made more progress on the suspension for the tagalong... Need to lower the ball hitch... And, figure out where the hitch should attach to the Model A frame... Ball & Hitch from the Revell 1937 Ford Convertible and Trailer...
bobthehobbyguy Posted August 4, 2021 Posted August 4, 2021 Coming along nicely. The trailer is a great idea. Nice fab work. 1
Kit Karson Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 (edited) This has become one of the most watched threads on MCM! Thanks for all the kind komments not only on my build (greatly appreciated, btw) but also on all of the projects in this epic thread! Oh, the challenge still stands... add your build to this thread!! We'd love to see more tribute pickups come together here. Made a bit more progress on my '29: Need to shorten the tongue... A couple of cuts... a little bonding... Mean while, the space between the aprons and in front of the kooler has been added... So, the front fenders have to be removed, finally! Knowing when to separate parts, depends on the komponent's integral strength required during the modification process... try to maintain as much structural support for as long as you kan, and then remove the excess piece(s) only when totally necessary. Even for me, waiting to separate the rear fenders for the tag-along trailer has been very nerve racking. Houston we have lift off and first stage separation!! Step-by-step mockup: Hook-up Rear Fenders Kooler And, the box... All together, now: 1929 Ford Pickup 80's Contemporary Street Rod - A @tim boyd tribute! @Dennis Lacy Thank you for your vision, regarding this thread, getting others involved in building their version of the 1929 Ford Pickup from an iconic era in hot rodding history has been amazing! -KK Edited August 7, 2021 by Kit Karson Text correction...
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 I like it. Got a YETI decal for the cooler???? -RRR 1
Dennis Lacy Posted August 7, 2021 Author Posted August 7, 2021 @Kit Karson That last picture in 3/4 rear view is the money! What a killer little rig you’ve created. The trailer is totally bitchin’ and so something you would have seen in the 90’s. Got any scale luggage and lawn chairs you can toss in there? ? 1

Kit Karson Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 Gonna restore the little red wagon that Norm Veber has had for the last dozen years or so... and, finish the mini-bike to go in the back of the PU... Should do the trick! -KK
tim boyd Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 (edited) Bill and Kit....really interesting and informative updates and progress.....seems like I check back here almost every day for your latest updates... Kit, that trailer is SO 1980's and such a cool execution on your part. Rodney, Dennis, and Bob...thanks for cheering on Bill and Kit, and everyone else contributing to this thread. Right now at the Boyd ranch I'm tied up with actually making progress on some long delayed exterior and interior home renovations, plus building a second revision test shot of an unnamed kit that is tentatively due out on the market early next year, so no time to devote the 1980's hot rod pickup models right now, but I do hope to have some progress on this subject myself to report here later this year... Cheers....TIM Edited August 8, 2021 by tim boyd 1
