spencer1984 Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 After being in the stash for way too long, I finally finished my Goldeneye Z3. Tamiya kit, FG Model resin wheels, and ScaleFinishes Atlanta Blue. I also added a scratch built OEM-style arm rest/console, figuring Q needed someplace to put the switches to operate the various gadgets (and to hide where I messed up painting the console). As always, comments & criticisms are welcome.
BVC500 Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 Nice clean build! I used FG Model wheels too - got rid of those awful ones that come with the kit. Tamiya has done that before - why choose the worst wheels available on the real car?? My only criticism is the paint shade - it seems too dark for Atlanta Blue.

I'd rather have an alternate wheel set than the optional up-top if conservation of plastic was the concern. As for the color, I'm kind of trusting ScaleFinishes here. It's the right paint code, and historically they've been pretty accurate. It does seem to react strongly to lighting conditions, much like the movie car did, so that could be part of it too. I guess I'll just have to take it to the Caribbean and see what it looks like there!
doorsovdoon Posted October 22, 2020 Posted October 22, 2020 Very nice. Clean looking build and the paint looks great. One of these rear ended my Ford Escort years ago, the damage was so bad it jammed the doors shut, I had to climb out the window.
Nazz Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 Good lookin' Z3 Bill. Who is FG and are those wheels still available? Here is the one I started. Same paint. Jerry

I can believe it...that clamshell hood is practically the first thing to hit, and transfer that straight back to the doors. 1 hour ago, Nazz said: Who is FG and are those wheels still available? Modeller Posted October 27, 2020 Posted October 27, 2020 I am a Big BMW fan but this should never have been a serious Bond Car contender (Z8 is a different story)... still as is was used in the movie it is nice to see it replicated... nice one.

The Bond BMWs were pretty controversial in general. I know the 750iL in Tomorrow Never Dies got some flak for not being "sporty" enough for Bond, but the E38 remains one of my all-time favorite automobile designs and will never be a wrong choice in my book.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Z3 (although I'd have the rarer Coupé version...) I just think the Z3 was wrong as a Bond car... even a Z3M would have been better but I don't think it had been launched yet.... but the Bond Z3 did get the Z3M wheels.

The original 4cyl Z3 was such a blatant product placement example in Goldeneye... it looked totally stock. IIRC, there was dialog in the movie of some Q goodies on the car, but nothing was shown... I did like the 750IL and Z8, though...
Pete75 Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 The interior is particularly impressive. Did you embellish the seats (piping/seams) or are they stock?

I used to pass a coupé on my morning commute, apparently he and I had similar schedules (albeit opposite directions)...that was a great looking car. 1 hour ago, Rob Hall said: The original 4cyl Z3 was such a blatant product placement example in Goldeneye... it looked totally stock. Yeah, even my non-Bond fan friend was disappointed that the Z3 was talked up so much then used for nothing more than a single drive scene. It would have been nice to see it actually run through the paces. 50 minutes ago, Pete75 said: The interior is particularly impressive. Did you embellish the seats (piping/seams) or are they stock? Thanks! The only change I made to the interior was the armrest, everything else is straight out of the box.
Rob Hall Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 I had a coworker back in the late 00s that had an early Z3 roadster, was dark green w/ the tan interior...rode in it to lunch occasionally. He used snow tires and drove it year round in Denver (and worked from home when the weather was too bad to drive it in). It got totaled by a driver than ran a stop sign down the street from the office in '08, replaced it with a then-new Boxster S.
