89AKurt Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Topic for inspiration, on how far can one go with sacrilegious blasphemy in ruining a perfectly good Mercedes Benz. AMG started the idea of hot rodding them, and now they are a factory subsidiary, so they shouldn't count. Maybach could be included, the Excelero was a one off hot rod. B+B was a customizer. I don't think gold wrapped Benzes should count, they are a dime a dozen. ? If there is a cult name for these cars, let me know. Starting off with a rendering of a 300 SL:
iamsuperdan Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Does the Kindig Designs Mercedes count?
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 (edited) A little more attainable... Edited November 30, 2020 by Ace-Garageguy

Scott8950 Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 I don't like Mercedes but i do kinda like this car. 1
RancheroSteve Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Earl Bruce's Von Dutch flamed Gullwing was pretty upsetting to the sports car purists back in the fifties.
stitchdup Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Now most of my merc pics are stanced so I'll try to only post the more interesting cars and classics. I have loads more if anyone want a specific colour
stitchdup Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Oops, the red and gold hot rod is an alfa, could an admin delete it please
Sam I Am Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Some of these are awesome! For years I have had a few ideas on how to upset the purists with a model of a MB, these just add more fuel to the fire.

Mike999 Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 A Mercedes shop in my old Los Angeles neighborhood built itself a "Merc-amino." An '70's (?) era Mercedes station wagon converted into a pick-up truck. Wish I had taken some pix. This wasn't a hack job. The conversion was very well done, looking like something the Mercedes factory might have built. It was painted dark blue with the shop name professionally lettered in white. I saw it running around for years, parked at the shop or hauling parts. Then I didn't see it any more. One day at the local post office, I ran into a mechanic who worked at the shop. Asked him what happened to the Merc-amino. He said it started costing more in repairs than it was worth, and the shop junked it.
espo Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 All of these great looking cars makes me think we might start seeing a new direction in some builds here. I know I got a few ideas.
Daddyfink Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 I really like Jay Leno's Survivor Gullwing. Customized back in the day with a Candy Apple Paint job that drives the Purists nuts!

Just the wheels are a clue, that engine looks beautiful, with the cast aluminum intakes that look perfectly 1950. 13 hours ago, Ace-Garageguy said: A little more attainable... Try that today and hire a body guard. ? 9 hours ago, stitchdup said: Now most of my merc pics are stanced so I'll try to only post the more interesting cars and classics. My personal favorites: I built the Fujimi 190 2.0E Evo, which is a simple curbside kit, that would be fun to kitbash with a DTM. I built the Heller 170 into My dad's Mercedes 170V Roadster, would be tempted to get another kit to create a hot rod. I should have had the body copied for casting, who would have liked that? I grew up with a 1961 190 sedan, I know there is a scarce kit from an obscure manufacturer, I'm sure it's more toy than model. Have thought about what a coupe would look like, and someone built one! That's awesome. ? 9 hours ago, Sam I Am said: Some of these are awesome! For years I have had a few ideas on how to upset the purists with a model of a MB, these just add more fuel to the fire. Cool! The 300 SLC is different, tasteful. The 190SLs are nice. The Ute, that could be done with any sedan, must be someone who will be inspired. 4 hours ago, Mike999 said: A Mercedes shop in my old Los Angeles neighborhood built itself a "Merc-amino." I know someone who hates MB, was telling me about what a maintenance nightmare they are. How many 600SEL have you seen on the road? When I was going home from Las Vegas where he lives, saw out in the middle of nowhere on the side of the road, you guessed it. 3 hours ago, vintagerpm said: [...] Thanks for the modern versions. Someone built the popular (blue one 3 posts up) into a Mad Max version. I was hoping for some old "collectible" kits to be pulled out of a stash. This is a serious idea of mine, double blasphemy of modifying a famous prototype that was never sold to the public, with the legendary Le Mans winner. 2 hours ago, Daddyfink said: I really like Jay Leno's Survivor Gullwing. To leave it in the patina state is double jeopardy, but that's what is cool about Leno. I have another project idea, my dad had a friend who had a Gullwing under a tarp in the back yard, which is a future diorama idea. Thank you everyone for contributing! ?
Joe Handley Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 So there 2 candy apple Gullwings at one time?! I heard that the VonDutch painted car was returned to stock at some point, unless Leno somehow ended up with it after it was reworked?!
Joe Handley Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Looks like Larry Watson got into the Gullwing repaints too! Wonder if that 3rd one is now Leno’s!

bobthehobbyguy Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 The story I read was this had an early candy paint job which did not age well. The flames were done to hide blotches. No doubt it drove purists nuts. But hey it was only paint the car had not been altered. Me I think its cool.
matthijsgrit Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 Nice topic. I saw the KindigIt Merc the other day and that lead to a search party... Some really weird stuff going on, as well as some beautiful cars. I dig the Foose and KindigIt modern approach and that 190 EVO sketch is really cool as well. Some examples I found (beware, some are awful!!) Canepa: https://canepa.com/1961-mercedes-benz-300sl/ to check the lovely details. Zeppo Marx 1927 Mercedes-Benz S Boattail Speedster from the Jalopy Journal): I warned you (not really Outlaw (it should be outlawed though) or hot rod):
