The AMT 1970 Monte Carlo SS454 is done, just before my end of the year deadline. It's a pretty nice kit overall, with lots of detail parts and molded in details. As kitted though, the front end sits a little high and my kit hood was too short to fit right, even though I didn't plan on using it. I used a resin hood from Lex's Scale Modeling, but I just couldn't get it to fit right no matter what I did, so I'll just have to live with it. I'm very happy with my first attempt at a vinyl top as well, and learned a lot for my next attempt.

The color is FolkArt Metallic Peridot and is cleared with Decoart Americana Duraclear Gloss Clear, and the top is FolkArt Hunter Green, both sprayed through my airbrush. The interior is a combo of FolkArt Hunter Green and Basil Green, and Apple Barrel Marsh Green. All trim is done with Bare Metal Foil, and I added gauge decals and door locks for extra detail.

The chassis was painted Apple Barrel Jet Black and I used some Aluminum and Terra Cotta craft paint for the weathering. I used the kit rims and the tires from the 1986 Monte Carlo SS kit with decals from Fireball Modelworks. The engine is craft paint as well with plug wires added for extra detail, although I now regret the choice of using green because of the body color for them. Thanks for looking, and see you all next year!!

That's a great build overall and the halo style vinyl top is superb. I have two more of these kits and would like to do one of them with a vinyl top such as your model .

That's a beauty, Craig.  I'd be proud to have that one in my collection.  Excellent job on the vinyl top and the weathering underneath.  Those colors fit it so well.  Congrats.

I remember following your thread on the vinyl roof cover. Turned out factory looking in every way. Great looking Monte Carlo.

That looks great! Too bad about the hood. I put a resin Cowl Induction hood on mine. It fit reasonably well.

That's a fine way of finishing the year off, I really like it. The colour combination with equally green interior reminds me of this Buick I saw a few years ago:

I had a 1:1 '71 for quite a while and you nailed it!  That interior and vinyl top are spot on.  Love the Rallye wheels.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the compliments!

Congratulations on a great build.  That main body color is period-perfect, the chassis weathering is very well done and your halo top came out great.  I'd never even thought of using craft paints, but I may be missing out based on what I see here.

Quick question:  what on earth is that thing in front of the master cylinder?

I'm not exactly sure what it is, but it is on quite a few 1:1's.620981.jpg.1eeb2983f0479761d4f132fb6a6d78d4.jpg

Thanks! I had tried custom mixing to try to get the right color, but then I found the Folkart Metallic Peridot and it was perfect. I use mostly craft paints anymore, especially in the winter in Michigan. I do still use spray cans in the warmer months, especially when the right color for a project is available that way. DSCN5513.thumb.JPG.17b52818f9704b76b887174eed2adac6.JPG

I didn't even notice the brake master cylinder being different. If I had to guess this may be a vacuum throttle control that would be connected to the cruise control system.  The object is mounted on the fender and not the brake cylinder, and has a vacuum line running toward the intake manifold. area under the air cleaner.  A factory air ride suspension was an option on these cars, but I don't think that would be it.

Having recently built one of these I was quite curious myself as to what function that cylinder mounted on the drivers side inner fender well served. I didn't realize these cars had any sort of air leveling system until I read your comment. And according to Hemmings that cylinder is in fact part of the "Automatic Level Control"   1970-'71 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS | Hemmings.   Mystery solved.
