pack rat Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Yes... a Charger wagon. A few years ago I picked up an original MPC '74 Charger annual. I kept looking at the custom rear roof extension thinking it might make for a cool retro '70's custom. I dug an old glue bomb Super Charger from the boneyard a few weeks ago and decided it was time. I cut the pre-scored side windows and sunroof from the '74 roof extension as I like the similar '73-issued wagon version over the enclosed '74 "van". A few additional mods....I lowered it a touch (yes...old school metal axles!). used custom wheels from a '69 Wildcat (probably fictitious but they look appropriate) on old AMT 70's-era two piece big 'n littles, modified the rear bumper and added a '66/67 Charger taillight, installed a pair of grille inserts from a Dukes Charger, and added side exhausts from an AMT '64 Cutlass (yes, the reissue has 'em) cause they look similar to those saw-tooth '70 Cuda rocker moldings. I also turned the hood scoop around and molded it in because the original installation was pretty rough. Finally...a '69 Riviera custom dash; not because I wanted too, but because I lost the Charger dash....somewhere. Paint is Tamiya TS-94 metallic grey.
Danno Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 (edited) That's cool! I love that front end treatment, and the 66-67 taillight is a nice touch! The wheels are perfect and the 'lakes pipes' look like they were made for this car. And, the 'station wagon' roof extension actually looks fine (they usually look like carp, IMO). Great, imaginative model! ?? Edited January 6, 2021 by Danno
Spottedlaurel Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 That's worked out really well! I particularly like the front and rear end treatments. Quite a shopping list of parts you've used. Looks like something you'd see in a period motor show report.
doorsovdoon Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 That actually looks pretty good! It has a kind of Lotus Europa thing going on.
Steamboat Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Very nice! The taillights look perfect. Why didn't MPC think of that? I built one of them as a teenager. It was one of my favorite models. I eventually rebuilt it as a Petty stock car.
spencer1984 Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Beautiful job, the custom touches all perfectly fit the design.
Koellefornia Kid Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Nice custom build! The color adds a kind of "stealth"- look and I really like the front and rear treatments!
Steve H Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Hi Mike, really cool custom! I agree with Nigel’s comment above, looks like it would have been at an auto show back in the day. Very well executed sir. Cheers, Steve
iBorg Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 I've seen the annual but never the van parts used. It definitely reflects the 70's style customs. The Riverra dash looks perfect for the build.
espo Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Very smooth looking body work. The interior and exterior colors look great together.
Bainford Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Nice work. I must say it looks better than I thought it would. Good job integrating all of the various components into one cohesive look. Really digging the early Charger talilight assembly.
michelle Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 very cool i have been trying to find the custom parts from all the original charger customizing kits so i can make them with the charger kits avialible curently
Draggon Posted January 7, 2021 Posted January 7, 2021 I dig this! Love seeing something like this built with those unusual custom parts. Well done!
Mr. Metallic Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Ma, I've been wanting to try something similar if I could ever get my hands on one of those roof pieces. I love the subtle changes you made, especially the addition of the earlier taillight
Claude Thibodeau Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Hi Mike! Cool idea. I remember around 1971, Harry Bradley came up with a series of concept drawings for long gone Car Life magazine: The wagon as a GT. He draw station-wagon versions of the Javelin, Mustang, Cougar, Cuda, Challenger, Camaro & Firebird... But not the Charger. I guess the MPC staff kinda filled the void. CT
