This is a 2015 re-issue of Dirty Donnie's AMT 1971 Dodge Charger, molded in wonderful orange plastic! Actually, I'm not sure its orange. I can't decide if it is Apricot or Tangerine. But either way, every part except a few chrome and clear parts is this ugly color. My wife likes the color and says I should just polish it and assemble it. But she is not a modeler.

There are a couple of sink marks in the top where the dome light and interior mirror mount caused the dimples. So after I puttied and sanded those out I decided to do a vinyl top with some masking tape. There was also a lot of flash and some mold lines to get rid on the body. After I have all that done, it also has to be done on a number of other parts. Tomorrow, I will paint the top flat white and then tape it off to paint the rest of the body. Not sure what color but I might try Sublime Green after a couple of coats of primer.  Thanks for looking!

That orange plastic is going to be a bear to paint over with Sublime. I would suggest primer and test paint on some bits of sprue first. How about Tor Red?

Just so you know, Sublime Green is a 1970 color and not a 1971 color.  The 1971 color was Green Go which is a darker green than Sublime Green.  I state this since you do seem to like to build them stock, but it is your model and you are free to build anyway you like.  I have built three of these Chargers and I ran into the same issues with the sink marks on the roof.  Also be aware that the front wheels may appear to be forward of where they should be on the chassis and I don't know if AMT corrected that issue.  I fixed my issue of the misaligned wheels by elongating the mounting slots on the chassis for the K member and slid it back during assembly to where the wheels are now centered.  Good luck and I'll be watching!

Thanks, Carl, Bill and Mike! I appreciate your comments!

I think my primer will cover OK. I just painted a Mopar Tor Red not long ago and so wanted a different color. I know that Sublime Green is a 1970 color as I  always check the Auto Color Library on every build. But Testors has discontinued Green Go and that means I would have to purchase an ounce of MCW or some other cottage supplier's paint at an exorbitant price, plus shipping, and break out the air brush. I have a half can of Sublime Green so I might as well use it. I should have mentioned it wasn't a color for 1971 above, but I didn't. But thanks for the suggestions!

Finished painting the body. Two coats of primer, one wet coat of paint and one coat of clear lacquer. Looks pretty good to me. I'll rub it out tomorrow. Thanks for looking! ?

Looks great John. I just put four coats of primer on a MPC Mustang II molded in red! Ugh! I hate red plastic. It has to be the worst. It does help to coat the inside of the body as well.

Thanks, Dave and Carl! I appreciate your comments!

Its been raining the last two days so I have been busy rubbing out the body and foiling it. Maybe I'll be able to finish painting tomorrow! The chrome trim for the back of the vinyl top might be a little wavy and the trim might be a little out of scale but overall it looks pretty good. Thanks for looking! ?

Its been a few days since I've posted but we had a lot of rainy days and now its dried out a bit and I had a chance to finish painting the other parts. I assembled the engine and only added plug wires. I should be able to finish in the next couple of days. Thanks for looking! ?

Its on wheels! Just the decals, marker lamps and a couple of paint touch-ups to finish. It went together well. Too bad it was molded in orange. Thanks for looking!

No, but she is a wife so she knows everything about colours anyway. ?

Joking aside, it looks great. Actually, the worst case of coloured plastic I have encountered was a Fujimi Porsche kit molded in yellow that I got the bad idea that I should paint white.... After tons of coat it still was some ugly cream-apricot-shade. Or maybe like an old white wallpaper in a chain smokers house.

Thanks, Mattias! I appreciate the humor!

I finally got around to completing the decals on this one. Despite the color of the plastic, it turned out to be a pretty nice build. Bumpers fit, wheel position looks good and engine bay came out nicely. The tape vinyl top probably helped with blocking out the colored plastic and the two coats of primer on the body helped the Sublime Green cover nicely. I used some old Mike's Speed Shop decals on the scripts as they are chrome decals. Thanks for looking! ?
