This is my first real build this year after a looooooooong slump. As a kid I always loved the box art for this kit (and still do) but always thought it would be hard to paint correctly so I never bought one. When Revell reissued this kit many years ago I bought up 5-6 of 'em, and they have been boxed up ever since. While digging around back in September I stumbled across the only one I had opened, and figured at 50, it's about time to tackle it!!! I started on this car the last week in September, and really got some good motivation going when we all received the sad news of Bob Paeth's condition, and passing. (Bob designed this kit in 1966) After a brief setback, I continued on, and really felt like Bob was sitting right here coaxing me along to get it finished. This one's for you old friend!!!

The truly awesome artwork....

The only real flaw (other than it's a 1960's Revell kit ) are the headers. The kit headers don't even come close to the box art design, so I still might scratch build a new set!!

It might have taken you awhile to get her finished ,but it was worth the wait. A very nice job on the build, but more important, a very nice tribute to a dear friend.

Wow! Great paint job--fantastic two-tone fade!

Just wondering; how many '53 Studes got the funny car treatment in real life? I ask this because the factory stock bodies were notoriously flimsy with no real sub-frame support (a PITA for restorers). I suppose if one started by welding the doors shut that'd be a start; but it seems like there'd be a lot of potential for twisting and warping at drag-track speeds. Anybody got photos?

Anyway, very fine work on that great old chestnut!

I bought one of the re-issues, and the paint is what is holding me back! You did an awesome job on it!

Can you share what paints you used?

Thanks for all the great compliments!!! It was a fun build, and one I've wanted to do for a lifetime....

Tony......The paint I used was Tamiya TS-52 Candy lime green from the can, and then Tamiya TS-19 Metallic blue through an airbrush, after decals, it was topped off with Dupont 2 part clear.

You could tear off old headers , purchase small rectangle strene ,glue small sections (1 each to where exhaust goes then add headers from double whammy! Just a thought ,I'm in the process of ruining the melting headers . :o

MAAAN! Seeing all these cool builds is driving me crazy!

I've gotta find some time to build something REAL soon. A lot of stuff WIP, but nothing touched for a while now.

Thanx for the pics!

John - I was looking at your headers, and comparing to the box art. Could it be that you have them switched, and below the frame? Looks like they should be above the frame to fit into the cut out on the fender/rocker, and may just be on the wrong side of the motor. Just a thought.

:o There has been lots of conversation on that very issue!!! The way I put mine on is the way the instructions call for, and the way the headers are designed. I have seen pictures of these with the headers put on over the frame, but they need lots of modification to look right. I thought about making a new set out of solder, or modifying the kit headers (and I still might) but I was trying to keep it as box stock as I could. I'm getting ready to build the Dodge Revellion next, another Bob Paeth design!!!
