Zippi Posted April 22, 2021 Posted April 22, 2021 I've had some issues with my airbrushing and gloss finish on my last kit which was the amt Chevelle Street Pro. I painted it with Anita's Glossy Black acrylic paint and then shot it with Rust-Oleum gloss. I airbrushed my 1956 Ford Foose truck with Ceramcoat (acrylic) and shot Tamiya Clear over that with no issues except I was really looking for a gloss finish instead of just a clear coat but still it came out good. HL had 40% off so I picked up the Revell 65 Chevy Impala (Foose) to use as my test body. I also picked up a couple more bottles of the Ceramcoat to try first since I did get a good looking finish with it. I'm going to spray my test body with the Ceramcoat the same way I did with my 56 Foose truck. I airbrushed it with 3 light coats and 2 heavier coats. This time once the paint dry's I'm going to airbrush it with Pledge and see how shiny it comes out. I've watched a lot of video's and it seems to work just fine with acrylic paint. I'm going to spray the test body a different way on each side that way I can do 2 test at a time. Now keep in mind I DO NOT have a controlled environment to do my airbrushing. I try and pick a sunny day with little wind. As soon as I'm finished spraying I comer the body, hood, etc. with boxes to protect from just. I'm open to any and all comments and suggestions fellows.
TransAmMike Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Looks like a smooth finish on the P/U body "Zip". As for the'67, in your WIP thread on it, you seem to have given up on it. I really think you should work on redoing the paint job if you're not happy with it. Just me Bob.?
FLHCAHZ Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 (edited) I don’t know how to link a thread, but if you search through the wip threads, I did a step by step on how I painted my ‘69 country charger. I used craft paint from hobby lobby and pledge. Came out pretty good. It was my fist time trying BMF. That part didn’t go so well! i wanted to add that I spray the acrylic paint a pledge/future in my basement. There are no fumes Edited April 23, 2021 by FLHCAHZ
FLHCAHZ Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 (edited) http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/159935-69-country-charger-pic-heavy/ not sure if this like will work, and I am still learning and practicing. Just some food for thought Edited April 23, 2021 by FLHCAHZ

Mike, I"m going to keep that one on the shelf to remind me of my early on builds and what not to do. I have figured one thing out.....the Revell kits seem to be better quality over the amt kits. Here is a pic of the finished 56 Foose truck. Edited April 23, 2021 by Zippi

Yeah that's pretty much the way I airbrushed my HL acrylic paint just maybe not as fast. I let mine set for 24 hrs after the paint and gloss. I'm just not sure what happened between airbrushing the Ceramcoat vs the Anita's paint. That's why I'm doing test now as like you this is pretty new to me. Thanks again dude.

Zippi Posted April 23, 2021 Author Posted April 23, 2021 Thanks Robert that blue looks nice. I was thinking about thinning the acrylic paint with the Pledge when I saw Chris Chapman doing it in one of his videos.

Sure do miss those days I'm thinking about for my 1st test thinning the acrylic paint with the Pledge and once the paint is dry give it a few more coats of the Pledge. Not sure if it will give it more of a shine or not. Ever try doing that?

Zippi Posted April 23, 2021 Author Posted April 23, 2021 (edited) Ok fellows....I shot a short video to show my working/painting conditions so when you make comments/suggestions you'll know how I paint my models. I really wish I could use one of those nice little spray booths. The only window I have to vent would be right next to my 49 so that's out of the picture. Maybe I could back my 49 out of the garage when it comes time to paint but that wouldn't work in the winter. https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNXt3UfSNrz6VrQLfq-m1Y8DjT64Mv7F7SmCJRIvUt1SVxkWHtHlfd-2vVPMwoiLQ/photo/AF1QipNqrbL05ei46zBb2A9gwRvnZVrLeGnUVcy7fMeQ?key=Vm4xVTBJR3ZLOEpRSVZMZDRIekV2VnF4S3g2WU53 Edited April 23, 2021 by Zippi
Zippi Posted April 23, 2021 Author Posted April 23, 2021 The rain held off so I went ahead and sanded the test body of the Foose 1965 Impala and got it primed. I really like the Rush-Oleum paint. It lays down so smooth and drys fast.

Your "Shop" Garage is really cool, some nice stuff in there and soooo freakin neat!!?. As for pulling out the '49, it's exactly what I have to do with my TA every time I paint. Now with that out the way, I'm just wondering. The '56 looks to have a satin finish, is that what you intended? And as for the pledge, it is definately an alternative to the Rusto Acrylic Lacquer that I have begun to use especially in terms of fumes but I'm not too sure about not clear top coating it ( at least with the pledge only). Really don't think you will get a nice finish gloss with the mixture only. Just my 2 cents my friend.
Zippi Posted April 23, 2021 Author Posted April 23, 2021 Thanks for the nice comment Mike. I have a bottle of the Anita's Glossy red I may try first since I had trouble with the black. Just havent crossed that bridge yet.

I was going for a gloss finish on the 56 but I bought the Tamiya clear instead of the gloss which I think is their TS-13.

Zippi Posted April 24, 2021 Author Posted April 24, 2021 I've been reading and watching video's about the Tamiya lacquer paint and how nice they look with a good wet sanding and polishing. Since I'm in the Paint testing mode I took a trip to the local hobby shop only to find out the Tamiya lacquer paint in the small bottle has not hit the US yet. The owner told me that he was sent the paint racks almost 2 years ago but has not seen any paint. He checked into it while I was there and said it's showing June or July before he would have any. I did pick up a bottle of the Novus 3 heavy scratch remover so now I have both the Novus 2 & 3 in my arsenal. I checked the 65 Impala body this morning to check for anything that may have stuck to the primer and all looks good so it will stay under the tube until time to spray. Suppose to rain all day so I'll have to wait to do any airbrushing.
Dave G. Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 (edited) You mentioned not being ready to tackle black. These are my 1/16 Model A fenders not buffed or clear coated. It's 5 coats of Tamiya X4 black acrylic thinned with denatured alcohol about 50/50, shot with a Paasche H and medium tip. The fenders were dry in that shot and it's just from my camera phone. The running boards aren't a mistake they are to be flat black. By the way I just hand held them over the open trash bag in the kitchen, then popped them into the dehydrator. I don't stress out how I go about this stuff.. Edited April 24, 2021 by Dave G.
TransAmMike Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 I have never used the Novus stuff. I've always used high grade automotive compounds and polishes because it's what I have on hand. Looking at your real truck I would think you have products that would work just fine.

The Paasche H is what I use with the same tip. Now you got me to thinking about the Tamiay arcylic paint. Haha....

Mike, once I go over the body with the Novus 2 & 3 then I'll use my Meguair's liquid wax. That is what I use on my 49 plus the Ultimate Detailer.
