Just a note about this kit, it's pretty old and some of the parts are not the best. You can build something cool with it but if accuracy is important to you some parts, mostly the engine, will need to be replaced. It's also not designed to adhere to actual gasser class rules and is more in the style of a "street freak" custom build.

Correct me if I'm wrong fellows but I'm seeing this as a new release (future) for 2021.

Yes, it will be coming out again sometime this year (or maybe next year, things are still a bit of a mess) but it's  a reissue of a kit that's been around for a while. Revell has 4 or 5 kits that share all the major parts with this kit, a Willys pickup, a Thames panel truck, an Anglia, and an Austin at least.

Thanks for the info dude.  Since I'm fairly new to the hobby just what is a reissue?  Would that be using the old molds to produce another run of the same model?

Yes, that's correct. This kit was first released sometime in the 60s, and has been reissued many times since. The tooling is worn so a fair amount of clean-up of parts is needed, and some parts are poorly depicted. As mentioned the engine is very weak (it's a throw-away). However, the Henry J kit provides the basis for a very cool gasser type build, as do the other Revell kits in this series. It's a good kit to populate with parts from the parts boxes, or kitbash with a better gasser kit, such as the newer Revell Willys, which could provide the engine, suspension, interior parts, etc.

Thank's Trevor.  Probably not something I would want then.  Wish Revell would come out with some NEW Gassers.

A couple of options. All modern kits.

JC....I have seen those but they just don't turn my crank.  They are kool looking but they are just not striking my fancy so to speak.  I'm in no hurry as I still have two kits on the bench.  Thanks though.

Haha....just bought that one from a fellow on this forum.  Hopefully have it by the end of the week.

When you are ready Bob you can try kit bashing.  This opens new opportunities to build what you want and not restrict you to only what the manufacturers offer.

Correct.  Sometimes some adjustments are made, mainly new decals and perhaps tires.  Box art can also change, but that is a packaging factor, not molds.

Yup, just haven't built enough models yet to have a good stash.

That will come in time. Best way to start is to get the 3in1 kits with multiple variations, as those kits (especially old 60's and 70s tools) will include lots of extra parts in one box.

Try finding the AMT Trophy series' kits that you like.

Examples include 53 Ford F100, 57 Ford Fairlane 500, 40 Ford coupe or sedan, 57 Chevy Bel Air or 59 El Camino. Great 60's kits that have stood the test of time.

Hey Bob - Just in case you haven’t considered them, here are two excellent kits that could be used as a basis for vintage gasser builds:

1. Revell’s recent ‘50 Olds coupe, modern tooling, builds like a Tamiya, looks totally accurate IMO when done.

I built the Mexican road race version because of the cool decals but hope to do a gasser version some day with mild mods to the suspension, engine and adding some narrow rear slicks.

2. The AMT ‘49 Ford “Gasman”kit:

This kit is from old molds but the re-issue is excellent and includes a lot of nice vintage drag parts.

I have stayed away from the older Revell gasser kits with the opening doors (original SWC Willys, Anglia, Henry-J) because of my bad experiences attempting them when I was a kid, very spindly assembly, poor engineering, lots of flash. I should try one again sometime just for fun, maybe this re-issue J? Would love to put a 1/24-1/25 Allison or Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 in one....

John

Thanks for all the info fellows.  The ole 1951 Henry J Ford Gasser has been popping up again on my Internet searching so it's got me fired up again.  Revell is showing a release date of September of this year.  Anyone know if this is going to become a reality later this year?

The Austin, Henry J, and Willys pickup share the same engine and running gear. The Anglia and Thames Panel are different toolings, and possess much better detail.

The original release date was Sept 2021 and looks like the Henry J is now pushed back until Jan 2022.  I've taken this one off my radar as it may be some time before we see it on the shelves.

It's out and available in Europe from more than one seller. $50 or so shipped to the U.S.

Yup - it's out in Europe and it's listed as an active issue on the Revell Europe site but I take it from Bob's post above (source unknown..to me anyway lol) that the US/Canadian release date has been pushed to next month.

The Henry J is really the only one I've been looking forward to. The Salt Shaker is another one but that's all I planned to buy for awhile. Hoped to be working on the Henry J this winter. We'll see.

Model Roundup is where I got the information Peter.  They always seem to be pretty good on their info.
