Is there any good way to paint a car white that was molded in black? I ordered an old kit but really want to paint it white. I suspect it wont really be possible to get the white without doing a ton of coats and losing details

I will give that a try. I really appreciate the advice.

I ordered the monogram 65 vette street machine and I love that design in white, especially with the smoked glass

Try using Duplicolor white primer. It builds up in very thin layers so it doesn't hide the detail as much as thicker primers. It also strips easily if you need to start over.

I've never done it myself. But, this would be my plan.

Make sure you primer and paint the hood attached to the body from the first coat of primer to the last coat of paint or else there will be a mismatch. Been there. Done that.

Actually I always put the body together to paint to make sure the color is right.

So do I. I recently learned the hard way with a white paint job that the primer has to match as well.

I would follow the suggestion of the gray primer followed by the white primer and then the final color coats of paint. The only thing I would add would be to use paints all from the same manufacture. I used this same method to build the Revell's  '80's issue of the Monte Carlo SS. I also masked the head light openings and the grill area as well as the portion of the rear bumper trim that were black on the original car. Still displays well after more than 20 years on the shelf.

If you’re airbrushing, Createx white sealer or Createx opaque white both work well for this job - they’re really high-pigment paints designed, I guess, for painting white stuff on black stuff easily.

The grey-then-white primer thing works well too like others have suggested already

Most of my work is done with airbrush.  Stynylrez white primer should pretty well hide the black in 1-2 coats.

Use Mr Hobby 1500 white surfacer for your primer and try out Gaianotes white EX paint. Thin both with Mr Hobby Mr Levelling thinner ?

Good advice it’s worked for me in the past..
