There's an element in today's society that lives for the number of "likes" they get on the interdwerbs. They're everywhere. Millions upon millions. There're also a lot of people who take the time to actually write responses online; sometimes, though admittedly rarely, even reasoned and coherent responses. Look at the typical YouTube video. You'll see "likes" and "dislikes" outnumber written responses by an order of magnitude, at least. But the folks who care enough to write something, or who just have to say something (no matter how idiotic), do it in spite of the one-click options. I don't think having a "like" button would deter anyone who has an intelligent comment, and it'd supply easy dopamine hits for the approval junkies. Is that a win-win? Meh. I agree with a lot of this. The problem is, at some point, the one-clickers will finally start typing responses like "why is Xingu the only one responding, he thinks he knows everything"

Casey Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 I don't know...if these folks in the know know better than most, who are we to say no? 1
peteski Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 I love how you are gently trolling us Casey. Likey, likey.
1930fordpickup Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 If there is a like button and you don't like it ,(Just like the Small Block Chevy in to many hot rod kits) don't use it. How simple is that?

Instead of typing nice will will see an anonymous like. Although a like comment is not the best respond it is not anonymous. I would hope the poster would be more expressive but at least with nice I know who commented on my work. Lets strive to be more communicative. When you comment say what you like about the model. To be fair, how many people who would use the like button aren't actually writing responses now anyways? I'm not sure if people who do not have an account here count towards the view count for a topic, but it does show that there are already people who view but don't leave a comment. Now I know that (a general) you would think that would mean even less comments, but I think that if someone is now taking the effort to leave a comment, they aren't just going to suddenly stop commenting because there is now a like button. I also think the like button is great to agree with someone's post rather than just leaving a comment that simply says "I agree!" without further context. I will say that on another forum I'm on that has the "like" system, I will like a post and still comment on said post. They don't have to necessarily be either/or.

But we don't know if the forum even has that capability. If it was by me, I would keep it "like-free". Yes, I'm grumpy, but nowhere near as old as some other members here. If there was a button, I’d give this comment a “Like”!??

Dave Ambrose Posted May 20, 2021 Posted May 20, 2021 The like button is especially useful on mobile/tablet devices. Typing on these things is a pain, and you'd want to have something more substantial to say before doing an actual reply. 1
Twostepn2001 Posted May 20, 2021 Posted May 20, 2021 (edited) l have been on another forum with this very same format for over 10 years. (Well, without the ads) lt has always had the "like" buttons. l use them quite a bit and really can't see how it would hurt the forum. They are at the lower right hand corner of each post. There are four different icons you can choose from. "Thanks", "HaHa", "Confused", "sad" and "Like". Here is what they look like: Edited May 20, 2021 by Twostepn2001

Wouldn't consider it newfangled'....like buttons and similar have been on forums and social media sites for 15 years or more...not a new concept.

Consider the average age of the membership here. While you and I aren't quite there yet, there are plenty who would consider such technology "newfangled". You and I were on the rec.models.scale usenet group in 1993 or so, so we both have been internet savvy for almost two decades, but we know how that changes as people get older. I don't have a TikTok account, so I get it, but I'm open to understanding and seeing the potential it has for anyone interested in this hobby. 1

I've been online since having CompuServe in the late 80s. Some days I feel ancient at 50..some of my coworkers are half my age. 1

Michael, I gave your post (above) a "sad face" rating. That's what I see when I look at the bottom right of your post. Before I did that, there was a "heart" showing, so I know others gave you "hearts" (yeah, I know, that is just like the thumbs-up). Then there also is a green square with a number in it "3". That shows others also rated your post. But since I can only see the sad face from me, how can I find out what the other ratings were? I don't see a way to display those other ratings.
Xingu Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 I am not sure how Dave has it setup. I can just click on the green square and see everything. 1
