Bob Ellis Posted June 27, 2021 Posted June 27, 2021 While the original AMT 1957 Chevy seems too simple for 2021, it was cutting edge for 1963
TransAmMike Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Wow Jim, I'm a bit envious. The interior detailing is looking awesome. She's coming along great?
Dennis Lacy Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Dang, your interior turned out awesome! All the extra detail paid off huge. I was actually considering trying flocking the floor in mine (never done it before) but realized with it being black it would barely be visible so I aborted. Save that for an open bodied car…
David G. Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Beautiful work on this so far! The hood bullets are great, excellent interior detailing and good color selection. David G.
OldNYJim Posted July 3, 2021 Author Posted July 3, 2021 (edited) Thank you everyone! Still plugging away at this one. Shot the dash, engine and other assorted white bits with a gorgeous pearl gold overlay, which stubbornly refuses to appear on camera ? Ill have to take an outdoor shot to capture it I think… Spun up a shift ‘knob’ on my lathe - don’t know why I imagined it should look like this but this is exactly what I imagined it would be ? Picked up these new Vallejo paints - I really wanted to try their chrome and this seemed as good of a project as any to test it on. Right out of the bottle, not as chrome-y as I would’ve liked… But with some lacquer thinnner it really improved! And this evening’s project was getting a start on the polishing: I’m of the opinion that that first round of sanding is the MOST important by far, and this thing has a lot of little nooks and crannies and bumps and lumps to work around…about three hours in on the 2400 grit stage so far, just taking it real nice and slow and getting a perfect flat base before working through the other colors. After that, I’m wondering if I want a silver, white or mint green insert on the fin there, or keep it body colored like I had originally planned. Any thoughts anyone? More soon! David G. Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Good progress on this. The chrome looks reflective enough but appears a little... grainy? Almost as if it were metal flake paint. David G.
Mike F. Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 (edited) Looking good so far. How about white, or teal, for the fin? Edited July 3, 2021 by Mike F.
Steve H Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Hi Jim, another great build. What a huge improvement on the interior, you make it look easy! The colour choices all round are perfect. As for the fin colour, maybe white with some pearl to match the dash etc? Regardless of what you choose, it will look great. Cheers, Steve
espo Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 You mentioned wanting ideas for the fin sides. I would try cutting several paper bits shaped like that area and paint them in the different colors. These could then be placed in the area to see if you like them or not before going to paint. Two tone options of the day were to match the roof color to the sides on the 210 model as the Bel Air had the aluminum splash panel there. This would also offer you the option of putting something in there to match the interior or even something altogether different. Great looking interior and the '57's always looked good in their factory shade much like you are using.

I still KINDA wanna go with something along the lines of this build… …I kinda like the simplicity of that monotone color scheme, but we’ll see. I also can’t resist messing with stuff ? Spent some time polishing out the body today…not totally done (ran out of daylight, and I prefer doing that in the daylight) but it’s starting to shine up some! Still not looking forward to the BMF stage, but it’ll be worth it….
Steve H Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 A lot of BMF on that one! I can’t help but hear Austin Powers saying “one miiillllion dollars” with that bill reflecting in your paint job.
TransAmMike Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 Looking great Jim, love '57's as I think I said in an earlier post. And yep, foiling that body is not something to look forward to. I've done 4 of them since getting back in the hobby and getting the trim around the windows is a b****!!
TooOld Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 Lookin' good Jim ! That Vallejo paint looks pretty good to me , not chrome of course but more like a polished metal .
OldNYJim Posted July 6, 2021 Author Posted July 6, 2021 (edited) Thanks fellas! Just about wrapped this thing up today, bar some little touch-ups and tweaks… Foiled the body: Got the engine and chassis assembled (nothing much interesting about those, just followed the directions and build it how I’m meant to, for once ?? Kept the kit tires but swapped the wheels for some from the parts-box: And once the chrome bits were all on there I’d pretty much run out of stuff to do: I intentionally ‘cleaned up’ the engine bay by leaving out the heater, horns and battery to give somewhat of a custom look, but aside from changing the wheels, lowering it and making that shifter it’s basically box stock. Learned a lot for the next one I want to build - but this is a pretty fun little kit! Edited July 6, 2021 by CabDriver
David G. Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Wow, that went quickly! Looks great, love the Western Smoothies. David G.
bisc63 Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Looks at once both old-school and modern. Dig it! Really clean appearance, and the color has really grown on me. Well done!
