plasticprime Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 This was a difficult kit to build. Parts fit was lousy and several parts were warped. The build was mostly straight from the box, but this was one of my first attempts at using external stowage parts and detail accessories. I scratch built the simple ammo box holder on the glacis plate, and to mount the rucksack on the turret I drilled a mounting hole in the turret and fabricated a mounting peg out of plastic rod, which was glued to the inside of the rucksack. I cut off the original antennas, drilled out the mounting points, and made new antennas out of thin wire. I lost one of the stowage hooks on the turret and made a replacement part from scrap photo-etch sprue. I drilled out the front machine gun barrel with a pin. Decals are a combination of water-slide and dry transfers. Paint is Tamiya lacquer, but with no flat coat applied.
Mike999 Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Great job on that oldie! And a real nice touch with the helmet! I built one years ago and remember the problems you mentioned. The M-24 is one of my favorite tanks. Besides US WWII, they were used all over the world and often played German tanks in war movies. Even parts of them were used all over the world. The French in Algeria mated the M-24 turret to their AMX-13 hull. (That version is available as a model kit from TAKOM.) Two other companies have also released newer M-24 kits, AFV Club and Bronco. According to reviews, the Bronco kits are very fiddly and never use 1 part when they can use 5. Both companies have released multiple versions: US WWII, British WWII, French in Vietnam etc. 1

I have one of the AFV Club kits in my stash but avoided the Bronco kits for the very reason you mentioned - excessive parts count, a good many of which are very "fiddly" indeed.
Mike999 Posted July 1, 2021 Posted July 1, 2021 Here's a great diorama idea. Ten M-24 Chaffees took part in the decisive battle of Dien Bien Phu. Because the French had no aircraft that could carry a tank, the M-24's were broken down into 180 parts for transport. Then they were re-assembled by mechanics, right on the flight line at Dien Bien Phu. Chaffees at Dien Bien Phu – Part I | For the Record (wot-news.com) 1
mustang1989 Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 Good looking track man. Like the subtle weathering. 1
