My last few models have required the steering column to be glued into a notch at the bottom of the dash and also glued against the firewall.

Is There a good method to accomplish this. if i try to glue in the column and guess the length i never get it right. If i try to glue it to the firewall and pull it up to the dash, it falls and gets glue everywhere.

On my current build i just glued it to the dash and cut the rest of the column off. I tried for an hour last night without luck.

There isn't an indicator of where to put the column on the dashboard. Like a pin or something

I've made the column longer, drilled a hole in the firewall where it's supposed to go through, then cut off any overhang on the other side of the firewall after it's in place.  All that, providing there's some detail on the engine compartment side that connects to the column.  If it's an old annual kit with a tub style interior, and the location of the column end is vague, I'll do something similar like drill the end of the column and insert a pin, then drill a hole in the interior bucket to provide a definite location for it.

On steering columns that attach to the dash and firewall, you can drill a small hole in the end of it, glue a pin inside (styrene rod or metal) and then drill a corresponding hole in the firewall. You'll have a positive mount that will make it easier to locate/glue.

On steering columns that mount only to the dash, just glue it to the dash before install.

I drill and pin everything with straight pins. If you drill your holes tight, you can pretty much dry fit everything.

I don’t like to attach steering wheel permanently until interior is completely assembled to assure proper position of wheel in relation to the seat etc

Like Roger said, I glue the column to the dash before installing it whenever possible.  If I have to glue it in later I just use a spot of super glue on the dash and hold it in place with my tweezers for a few seconds.  Seems to always work ok for me.
