dmac99 Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 (edited) Hi all, I spent a long time airbrushing some 1/24 wheels that I had stripped using bleach. I'll share the results when the wheels are fully done. The full process was strip chrome --> clean & dry --> tamiya liquid surface primer --> mr color C2 Gloss black --> Mr Color Super Metallic (Super Chrome Silver SM206) --> Tamiya X-22 clear. So the X-22 clear is a good way to protect the fragile metallic finish without reducing the shine very much. Just wanted to put it out there that in my testing the Tamiya X-22 clear gloss did not reduce the metallic shine anywhere near as much as lacquer based clear coats such as the Mr Color GX UV-Cut gloss clear. I did a spoon test and while the GX UV cut gloss drastically dulled the appearance, the X-22 still looks pretty shiny. Edited July 29, 2021 by dmac99
bisc63 Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 Wow! That's interesting, a clear that protects without dulling is a Grail product for model builders, as most "chrom-ey" paints seem to be delicate to the inevitable touch.
GMP440 Posted August 4, 2021 Posted August 4, 2021 Sorry I never answered your question. I would give Duplicolor engine enamel clear a try. When I clear my bodies the foiled scripts shimmer very well.
