Zippi Posted August 3, 2021 Posted August 3, 2021 Just sprayed my 41 Willy's body with Tamiya TS-8 Italian Red lacquer. I'm thinking of trying the Rust-Oleum Acrylic Lacqer clear gloss over the Tamiya lacquer. I'm not sure if this Rust-Oleum lacquer can be wet sanded or not. I've read pro and cons about sanding lacquer on the ole interweb. Does anyone have any experience with wet sanding the Rust-Oleum Acrylic lacquer clear?
AMT68 Posted August 3, 2021 Posted August 3, 2021 (edited) Bob, I recently used that same product on the '64 Chevy body pictured below and it is wet sanded. I'll probably go for some additional wet sanding to improve the shine. Note this has been sprayed over a Dupli-color auto lacquer paint. Also I'm about to experiment with the Rust-oleum Lacquer pictured below on a Tamiya TS lacquer. Just to see if there would be any compatibility issues. Edited August 3, 2021 by AMT68
Zippi Posted August 3, 2021 Author Posted August 3, 2021 Thanks for the info Tom. Looks like your 64 came out pretty nice. I'm going to let the Tamiya TS-8 cure for a couple days then give it a go.

That green can plain lacquer dries high gloss and flows out well. Just be careful of runs, maybe try it on an old body or test shoot one way or another with it. I did the whole chrome tree on a 49 Ford with that stuff and it came out crystal clear, you wouldn't know it was coated with anything. Edited August 3, 2021 by Dave G.
TransAmMike Posted August 3, 2021 Posted August 3, 2021 Interesting how many clears Rusto has. "Zippy" and I have have had several PM discussions about my use of the Rusto automotive crystal clear. It's my go to but I have never wetsanded it. It usually lays on so smooth just a good compounding, polishing and waxing has been good enough for me. BTW, I now use Createx acrylic and it works just fine on it. But for those who will be using it as Dave said, it will run if you are not careful.

Zippi Posted August 3, 2021 Author Posted August 3, 2021 I'll be spraying my 41 Willy's in the morning so I'll report back on how it goes. I'm very familiar with lacquer being thin and running easily. It's the same way with the Tamiya Lacquer paints I'm using.

Thanks for the advice Dave and I plan on spraying an extra hood that I have in the parts boxes. Looking forward to Bob's results. Edited August 3, 2021 by AMT68 1

Looking forward to Bob's results. You'll get a feel for it pretty quick. I've used this on models but more so on wood working projects and some wood turnings too. I think I have a couple long drop wall clocks I built for people out there that I finished in this. I also mix some of the wood working lacquer that comes in quart cans, some called brushing lacquer, and have airbrushed those. All these lacquers buff up very easy. Some automotive acrylic lacquers are harder and don't always buff out so easy. They also can get brittle with age, brittle on plastic isn't the greatest combo, can end up with cracks in the surface over time. Just sayin. Edited August 3, 2021 by Dave G.

All very valuable information and off to find a test piece to start spraying.
Zippi Posted August 4, 2021 Author Posted August 4, 2021 Just did a little test on the top portion of the dash on my 41 Willy's. This is after just 2 coats. Looks like the Rust-Oleum lacquer is compatible with the Tamiya lacquer. Now it's on to the body.
Zippi Posted August 4, 2021 Author Posted August 4, 2021 I got the body and hood clear coated. Two light coats, one medium coat, and one wet coat with 20 min flash time with each coat. I'll let this cure until the weekend then start the wet sanding.
cobraman Posted August 4, 2021 Posted August 4, 2021 Looks good. I have been using the Duplicolor 1K clear on the last two models and I really like it.

So how do you like the this clear compared to the other Rusto clear you were using?
Zippi Posted August 4, 2021 Author Posted August 4, 2021 Well.....I think the Rust-Oleum enamel and lacquer gloss clear coats lay down about the same and both are thin so running could be an issue if your not careful. One being an enamel and one a lacquer and they both can be we sanded so I think they are both great products. I think either one would be fine for clear coating a model.
Fat Brian Posted August 4, 2021 Posted August 4, 2021 I've been using the acrylic lacquer and found that it's very susceptible to humidity, it dries much rougher now than it did in the winter and spring. I've also noticed that it can cause the color coats to pull back from the edges of panel lines. This hood shows how it thinned at the edge, it wasn't like this before the clear. This is Duplicolor red over Duplicolor white primer.
Zippi Posted August 4, 2021 Author Posted August 4, 2021 Thanks for the info Brian. I'm well aware of the humidity and the important roll it p!ays in painting. Don't ask me how I know. Today the humidity was 52% so for me that was ideal.
AMT68 Posted August 4, 2021 Posted August 4, 2021 That Willy's turned out great Bob and doesn't appear from the pictures like it will need much wet sanding. I've never thought to try the 2X enamel clear but think it would be worth attempting. 1

After the cancellation of Testor's Wet Look clear (a tragedy!), I was experimenting with all sorts of clear, and it occured to me that since Testor's was manufactured by Rustoleum, maybe some of the "corporate" clear might have the same viscosity, which is so critical to the way the Wet Look flows and shines. So, I tried the whole family of Rusto's clear. Nothing quite similar to WLC. But, when I saw this one, with the black chair on it, I tried it on test panels pained with Tamya's TS gloss black. Well, it has reasonnable shine, flows well, and presents very little orange peel. BUT... IT is VERY HOT. After 2 tack coats, I tried a wet coat, and the Tamya's black almost washed away! So, be warned: light coats only. So far, the best alternative I found is Mr. Hobby Super clear. Flows well, doen't run, polishes well. I understand they have also a "Gloss coat clear", to be used as a flash coat, but I can't find it locally. When I do, I'll try it! Maybe some user can comment? CT

I've had issues with auto lacquers adversely affecting base metallic color coats when sprayed too wet without adequate light initial coats which hasn't been an issue with Testors Glosscote. Just used Wet Look Clear on my latest build and despite orange peel it did shine up very nicely. Thanks for the info on the Rusto Lacquer with the black chair as I'll keep that in mind when using the product. May try Mr Super clear as I've heard other positive comments. BTW....just saw Testors WLC on Hobby Lobby's website and apparently it is still in stock but maybe only temporarily? Edited August 5, 2021 by AMT68

But, they asked that buyers refrain themselves to 1 or 2 cans... because of low inventory. Alas, having it shipped across the border to Canada is expensive, if not forbiden, because it is an "explosive" product... Sigh... CT

TransAmMike Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 As "Zippy" knows, I have been using the Rusto Crystal Clear and have had good results. That being said tho, My last application of it over Createx Wicked Color is giving me grief. I think I know the problem in that I may have applied the clear too soon after spraying the Createx. I sprayed it the third day after the paint job and for the second time (this was a repaint due to the same issue) and the result was crazing similar to when you spray conventional lacquer over enamel. Since my memory isn't was it used to be, it seems on my '55 Chevy Pickup build painted with a very same paint It was over a week before I sprayed the clear and it came out just fine.
Zippi Posted August 5, 2021 Author Posted August 5, 2021 I know Mike faught this paint issue on his 55 pickup but it turned out great in the end after some hard work. It takes experience and talant to correct a major paint issue and Mike has both.

May have been to soon, may have been a little too heavy but ate up the color coat like it was candy
