crowe-t Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 (edited) Is there a glue that works on stainless steel? I need to glue a stainless steel rod into a styrene tube. Will JB Weld or a regular 5 minute epoxy work? Edited August 31, 2021 by crowe-t
peteski Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 JB Weld (the one that takes long time to set) will most certainly work well, but you will have to wait overnight for to to set. To improve adhesion I would roughen the rod's surface with sandpaper, and make absolutely sure that the glued areas are clean and free of any oils (including oils from your skin). I usually clean the parts to be glued with a degreaser such as 99% or 91% Isopropyl Alcohol, Naphtha, Lacquer Thinner, or Acetone. Either of those will remove any oil residues. Other (faster setting) epoxies and even CA glue will also work, but the bond won't be a strong.
Muncie Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 3M Plastic Emblem and Trim Adhesive from the local auto parts store. It will take a day to develop some strength, then a week or so to fully set. Then it will be permanent. It is like a high performance contact cement. It may be more than we need for model cars but it has a lot of other uses.
