I recently purchased an AMT 1991 454-SS Pickup (wish that this kit could be reissued... !) and I noticed that its instruction sheet called-out 'Garnet Red' for the interior colour . I seem to recall that Garnet Red is an OEM G.M. paint colour from c.1970 ; and that Testors had a paint by that same nomenclature .

IIRC , the Testors paint is a metallic (as is the G.M. body colour) -- I can't imagine that a fabric interior would have a metallic sheen to it ; and , it's been at least 30 years since I've used the Testors offering . Now , with that being stated , I'm wondering if there's a close-enough red paint which I could use for the interior of the pickup ? Testors Flat Red ? Perhaps a Tamiya colour ( prefer aerosol ) ?

Thanks in advance .

The interior color that Chevrolet used was just slightly brighter than the material in the Monte Carlo SS of that time. Tamiya offers a few shades of red  and I think that might be a supplier to consider. Their Maroon Red would be to dark and their Bright Red to bright, so something in between.  This would apply to other brands as well.

Thanks much for your reply . I'm leaning toward Testors Flat Red , even though I'm not typically a fan of their enamel paints . I prefer --and use almost exclusively-- Tamiya , but am not married to their products .

One thing's for sure : spray painting a small interior tub while performing a colour change (in this case , black-to-red) will be fun . I'll likely be using Tamiya Light Grey Primer as the base ; White Primer if need be .

If you have a chance think about trying your colors even without primer on the bottom side of the interior. I'm a big fan of using primers, but your trying to get a darker shade and maybe, just maybe spraying it over the black plastic may work in your favor here. The dashboards and console are a plastic material and were semi glossy and the seats were a fabric that would be flat and a little on the furry side so you actually want a ruff flat finish on those.

Garnet Red was a regular production Chevrolet paint color. But they had no qualms about re-using color names or even old colors with new names.

See if this works for you.

These are the only pics I have of the interior in the one I built many years ago. I'm pretty sure I used a TESTORS flat dark red. Back then, TESTORS was all I used on anything. The exterior was TESTORS Gloss Black from the spray can, with no clearcoat. I got lucky on this one.

Thanks much . I'll have to check for availability of that shade of red .

Nice looking build , by the way !

Perfect !  Apparently , even the brochure calls it Garnet Red .  I'll keep that in mind should I not find a satisfactory hobby-specific shade .

That's a great idea . Matter of fact , that's how I used to paint the red sections of the seats , etc. , on the black-plastic issues of the Monogram 1986 Monte Carlo . It was tedious , but I'd brush multiple coats of Testors Flat Red in the respective areas .

I also built a few of the Monte Carlo SS. I factory ordered a White one with the Red interior for my wife in '86. We didn't sell it until 2002 and used the money to get a place for her mother to live. We sold it for what we had paid for it in '86. As I recall the interior spray I used for the model was Testers Kiln Red which I think has been long discontinued. I masked the Black plastic around the Grill and Head Lights and the portion of the rear Bumper that were Black on the 1:1 car.

Such a classic bodystyle ; I love the 1984-1988 styling the best  ( Cutlass , Regal , Gran Prix , Monte ) .

Amazing that you kept it for 16 years , then sold it for what you'd purchased it for new ! That's awesome !

Actually, I use metallic paint with a coat of flat clear to simulate upholstery material all the time.

On 60's cars it was fairly common to have a slight metallic in the upholstery. Not on a 1990,s pickup lol. Nice interiors btw.

This is what I'm talking about, with the way the velour catches the light on the contours of the seats. It has the same look as metallic paint with flat clear over it.

But whatever looks good to the builder, right.

Those are some spectacular pics, Chris !

Them seat risers seem to have had a good number of encounters with salty boots.

Does the ol' plow truck still run with the instrument cluster yanked out of it?

Unfortunately that particular truck hasn't seen use in years as the transmission have up the ghost. I'm swapping the interior into my other truck one of these days...
