A Cool 'Mainstreamer', as Tim Boyd was calling them.

It was a Trend I liked, and I wished it had caught on more strongly.

I had always wanted to try to build a "Mainstreamer: 70 1/2 Camaro, using the 1990's AMT Kit.

The problem with those kits is the tires.....I believe that Revell no longer had the tire mold and they are an oddball that only fits the 1962 annuals.  May not be financially viable to be  doing a new tire tool for that.

I remember way back when, I met Bill Laskowich of Revell at a show.. don’t remember the year but Revell was showing test shot for the Caprice police car and taxi at the event.

He indicated that they had the Mopars.. Chrysler, Dart, Valiant.. but they were missing tooling.. it may have been the glass or tires.

If Atlantis has these tools, neither is insurmountable.  If I remember correctly when Model King paid to resurrect the 59 Chrysler, they used a standard Round 2 tire and modified the wheels to fit that. The tires and wheels were wonky on the Revell kits so that would be a welcome solution.

I've heard both tooling stories about those old 62 annuals, glass and tires. Tooling new tires doesn't seem to the issue it used to be.  Depending on the interchangeability, they may only need a couple. The glass might be a bit bigger of a deal, but definitely not insurmountable. Window glass tools aren't all that complex, and in fact, are probably cheaper to create than tire tools.

Yup.. window tools would be fairly easy if an existing example would be supplied.   No need to tool those old wonky tires.  Only need to modify the kit's wheels to accept tires they can currently supply.

Then a boatload of rivet counters will complain they're not accurate enough ??

I have H-1262 Dodge Dart 440 4 DR, H-1261 Plymouth Fury and Dodge Lancer H-1253. The fit of the glass is a little sloppy. The glass from the Johan '62 kits fits the Revell Fury/Dartbodies requiring only a minor reshaping of the upper windshield frames of the Revell kits for a perfect fit. I vacuformed the Johan glass for use with the Revell kits. Since I plan on using the chassis, suspension and engine compartment parts from Lindberg '64 Mopars (I'm not crazy about the Johan/Revell chassis), tires aren't a problem. As a matter of fact, the Revell stock hub caps, and wheel backs with the axle stub removed, fit the B.F. Goodrich tires with the separate whitewalls found in AMT kits.

I'll contact Peter Vetri to see if he'd like to borrow the Fury/Dart/Lancer glass to possibly make a tooling.

I have a thread about the '62 Newports I've been working on:

Keep in mind there are a lot of little issues with this kit; chassis fit especially. One screw post in the rear (right side IIRC) needs to be shortened 1/16" or more so the chassis doesn't sit lopsided, and the slot in the panel below the grille needs to be recut at least 1/8" higher for the tab on the front of the chassis to get the correct ride height. It can be a nice car, but even nicer with some (?) effort.

As long as the body is accurate, that’s all I care about.  No chop top greenhouses like their recent Jaguar XKE and older Mustang LX notchback kits.  Even Moebius has a slight chop top in their recent test shots of the upcoming ‘65 Chevy II gasser kit.  However, I think they plan to fix that before it gets to the final tooling stage.
