Does anyone know of a nice flat gunmetal paint. I like the Tamiya LP-19 and LP-20 colors, they have nice metallic look, but they have quite a glossy finish to them. I googled it and came up with Tamiya XF-10…but that appears to be just a grey with no metallic qualities? I could just do a flat clear over the LP-19 or 20, but that’s an extra step I’d like to avoid. TIA.

My current go-to is a Folk Ark craft acrylic called Brushed Metal Brushed Dark Gray. I'm very happy with how it looks. I think I got it at Walmart.

Is it this stufff? I’d prefer a laquer, but I will try this if I can’t find any. Thanks!

Edit: Oops, I see this is pale silver, so they must have a few different shades.

Citadel makes a flat acrylic paint named "Leadbelcher."  I guess "Gunmetal" wasn't cool enough or something.

The makers say: "Designed to give a smooth matte finish over black or white under coats."  I've used it on bare plastic, no undercoat, and it worked just fine.

I think you’ll find most metallic paint are a semi-gloss and only come to life after a gloss coat.

So I would think the LP-19 and LP-20 would be fine as they are. They will be reflective with the metallic flakes but won’t have a smooth surface (due to the flakes)

I would also look into the Mr Colour range if you see them. Their a great lacquer paint and have a massive colour range. Another good paint is Gaianotes lacquers.

Tamiya has a Light Gun Metal and Gun Metal in the TS line. As I recall, they dry fairly flat. But, you may have to hit them with Flat Clear to make them really flat.

Yes, they have several shades. I have a light one too.

I guess I should be more specific. I want something to paint exhaust manifolds with…like a flat cast iron colour. Preferably in a lacquer paint. I guess I could add a little black or dark grey to some flat aluminum?

As I mentioned earlier, if you found the color that you like, but it is too glossy, shoot some Dullcote over it.

Or, here is a photo where the manifolds of my 1:43 298 Cobra is visible behind the battery.

I used Alclad II 121 Burnt Iron, or 123 Exhaust Manifold (don't remember which, but I suspect 123).  They dry flat.

Do this! I like to mix Testors flat enamels; you can get an enormous range of realistic metal shades quite easily. For iron manifolds, I start with Flat Steel ( a "warmer" silver than aluminum) and add Flat Black a drop at a time to darken to taste. Sometimes I'll add a drop of Flat Rust or Flat Brown if I want it to look not-so-freshly cast.

Those Testors metalizers mentioned above are VERY nice if you can lay your hands on some.

Go to an auto parts store (Advance, Autozone, Napa, etc) and get a spray can of cast iron paint. While you'll need to prime the parts first, it's perfect for blocks, exhaust manifolds, and anything else that's supposed to be cast iron. It dries flat.

Another option is Tamiya XF-56 Metallic Grey. Not dead flat, but looks the part on exhaust manifolds. And LP-61 would be near on the same maybe a shade darker.

Both are very much gloss paints.
