That depends on the scale you're working in, and where you plan to get your engine from, and how much detail you want on it.

Personally, since its a custom I'd go with a big block from the AMT 70 Chevelle kit. It even has a custom fuel injection setup.

You could also dress up the engine of the kit you are using.

I recommend that you provide more info with this request.

I used the engine from a Monogram NASCAR kit for a small block in my build of that kit. For big blocks, the Monogram 70 454 Chevelle has the most stock looking one. The Monogram 66 Malibu street machine and 39 Chevy both have modified versions of a 427 with an aftermarket clutch housing and either a tunnel ram intake or supercharger.

A lot of great suggestions for a big block. You did mention a possible small block. Other than a well detailed LS engine you might think about the small blocks in the: Revell '69 Camaro Z-28  (blue car on the box) since it has a cross ram 2x4s and some great looking headers. The '69 Nova SS has a stock 4 barrel or inline 2x4s and headers. The AMT '67 Nova SS has the optional 350 hp 327 and 4 speed from back in the day. One of the unique features is the duel intake air cleaner. While not very special in it's self think about the standard small block used in the Revell Pick Ups and the Suburban issues. The main reason for these beyond being very nice basic small blocks are the stock exhaust manifolds and head pipe on the exhaust. There is a very tight fit for the exhaust on these in a truck chassis with the center dump cast iron manifolds and these kits provide a perfect head pipe to clear the frame. This can be done with after market tubing but is a pain to do.

The AMT 70 Chevelle is 1/25 so it's engine is going to look a bit small in the Monogram truck. I doubt anything from the Monogram Heavy Chevy Chevelle kit will fit the AMT engine but if you have the entire Heavy Chevy engine that's what I would use. There isn't a lot of 1/24 American engines on the aftermarket since most US kits are 1/25. If you want an LS the 2000/2001 Revell/Monogram Camaro has a good one and that kit is fairly cheap.

A lot of guys will poo poo using Shapeways but I love Ron Olsen's parts.

You could go with this LSx which comes with everything you need except a carb.

With the processing fee they've added and shipping it comes to $26.85. About your standard kit price, and you can't bet better detail.

I'll second the suggestion of using the 1/24 SBC from the Monogram/Revell '37 Ford kits, and the Testors/Lindberg '38 Fords have a decent SBC, too, with different accessory parts. Both lean heavily toward the '90s Street Rod era, but the "billet" aluminum style valve covers and air cleaner can be replaced with some parts box scrounging. The trans is a 700R-4 auto, at least in the '37 Fords, the headers are block hugger style, and the intake an aftermarket single 4-bbl type, IIRC.
