This is the Revell kit from Germany. I would like to put a vinyl top on it. Other than that it will be pretty much out of box. One thing I noticed while trying to map out the chrome roof trim is that the creases between the rear fenders and the B pillar seem to be too sharp. Other than that, the body looks to be very nice!

Depending on the color of the car and the angle, it can be fairly pronounced to looking almost smooth. So I added a slight radius to it with some milliput.

Once this has set up well, I will re-examine the possibility of adding  a vinyl roof. ? All comments or advice welcome.

Good eye catching the body shape. For the proper shape of the moldings for the vinyl roof I would look online for pictures of 1:1 cars that have the vinyl roof option from the factory.

Thanks David. I have downloaded quite a few pics. It’s not an easy molding to make. I don’t think I can get any styrene strip to curve that sharp without heating it. So I think I may have to cut the section on each side of the trunk from sheet stock and file to shape.?

I have only done a few vinyl roofs in scale, but I have done a few chrome trim addons.  My thought would be to make sections of the trim much the way GM did on the 1:1. The one long part at the edge of the trunk opening. The curved part connecting that part to the side trim that runs along the bottom of the sail panel would have to be hand bent but you're doing this with a very small thin piece of trim that can be bent and glued down as you go. I have done just this same type of bend on the top of the tail fins on the '57 Ford wagon to make a factory style tow tone. Also added some curved side molding trim added to the Suburban kit to add body side moldings.  Look at using Plastruct 1.5 mm half round for the moldings. After you have the curved part glued down you can cut the end at an angle to match the lower side trim. The same thing to connect the roof drip molding down along the back side of the side window.

For the vinyl roof trim, I started with the two sharp curves on either side of the trunk. I punched a 1/4” hole in some .015” styrene and then trimmed and sanded it to shape.

I had to make a relief for the trim at the bottom of the rear side windows. I glued a narrow strip of .010” styrene to a wider heavier piece and then added a narrow strip of self adhesive sandpaper. The wider piece acted like a depth stop so that I could only sand  to a .020” depth. ?  A little clean up with a file and I glued in a piece of .020” sheet and filed it roughly to shape.B0D54FF3-8DBF-494C-B200-828856150C44.thumb.jpeg.f2c335b8b83fd639a1a2c82f19ef247a.jpeg

For the side pieces I used some narrow vinyl tape and eyeballed the slight ogee curve. Then I covered it with masking tape so it would keep it’s shape when I pulled it off. I made a pattern and transferred it back to masking tape which I then used as a guide for gluing down some .015 x .020 strip.

It needs a bit of sanding and smoothing yet, and I still have to do the seams on the roof, but I think it turned  out ok.?

I have this kit and a couple of the Revell '69's and would like to do a vinyl top on at least one of them and this topic provides and excellent tutorial on trimming the edges of the top. I never would've thought about building out the lower sections of the rear quarter windows.

Thanks Guys!
I’ve got the interior finished. I used some Gofer Racing seat belts instead of the kit decals. I also hacked 1/8” off of the steering column as the wheel looked way too far away from the dash. And I finally got some colour on it. Next is the foiling and decals before some more clear. Wish me luck!?

Thanks Alan. It is Mr. Color #57 Metallic Blue Green, sprayed through my Paasche H, and Mr. Color super clear gloss straight out of the can.

WOW, very nice work Greg, I missed this thread but I am glad to see one of these beautiful 68 Chevelle in the WIP.  You are very meticulous, the interior is beautiful as well as the color, I love that blue.  The vinyl top looks great on this body type, a must have! ?

Thanks Everyone! I got the foil done and it turned out pretty good I think. ? I wanted to do another coat of clear to seal the foil before starting the decals, and In my haste, I laid it on a little thicker than I should have.? I may have to do a light sanding with some #3000 in some areas. Hopefully a couple more light coats after the decals will improve the looks.?

Nice job Gerg!  I have heard of this technique many times but have never tried it.  Is it possible (if lacquer is used as a clear coat) for the BMF to lift?  Does the lacquer adhere well to the BMF?  I know some modelists use BMF as a mask for clean lines so I'm wondering what your experience is with this.
