mrmike Posted January 21, 2022 Posted January 21, 2022 My new project is the Revell of Germany Volkswagen T2 Bus. This will have a two-tone Tamiya TS-26 Pure White paint over orange plastic scheme and Tamiya TS-13 Gloss Clearcoat. To be built box stock, maybe with a some ignition wiring and whitewall tires. This is an easy-click system model with 109 parts, so no glue is necessary. But, I may use some if needed. I was inspired by Tim Rhine, the Associate Treasurer of my Classic Plastic Model Club to get this kit and build it. I have already started masking the body for the two-tone paint scheme. More VW to come...
TransAmMike Posted January 21, 2022 Posted January 21, 2022 Well good luck with it Mike (from another Mike?). Gonna mod it any?? I can see possibilities.
mrmike Posted January 21, 2022 Author Posted January 21, 2022 Thanks Mike! No mods on this one. Will be built box stock. If I build another, I may make some mods to it like lowering the suspension or maybe change the engine.
Mike C. Posted January 21, 2022 Posted January 21, 2022 Nice. I'm still waiting for the Westfalia version.
hct728(Bob) Posted January 21, 2022 Posted January 21, 2022 Nice to see a kit of the second generation bus, though I'd call it a Type2 T2
mrmike Posted January 23, 2022 Author Posted January 23, 2022 (edited) Thanks Mike and Bob! I downloaded a bunch of pictures of my subject vehicle and look at them occasionally. I was looking at a VW T2 Bus that had dual tailpipes and I just had to have them! I looked at the parts in the box and I would be able to fit a set of pipes to the muffler for dual pipes! I love it when a plan comes together! Edited January 23, 2022 by mrmike
mrmike Posted January 23, 2022 Author Posted January 23, 2022 I saw a picture of a VW Bus with dual tailpipes and I just had to replicate them! I started thinking about the parts necessary and I found them in the Revell '29 Ford Model A Roadster kit. Out of the two kits I have, I found four (2 each) lower radiator hoses for exxhaust pipes and two metal exhaust tips from a 2006 Mustang GT that I did not use. More VW T2 Bus to come...
mrmike Posted January 24, 2022 Author Posted January 24, 2022 This VW T2 Bus is coming along smoothly! I added the whitewall decals and I tried to get them centered and round since there is nothing on the tire to line the decal up with. The engine has been painted, assembled, decaled and modified to a dual exhaust vehicle. The front and rear suspension have been painted and assembled. More VW T2 Bus to come...
mrmike Posted January 26, 2022 Author Posted January 26, 2022 (edited) Some masking and the interior got a bit of Tamiya TS-29 Semi Gloss Black. I painted the wheels with Tamiya TS-26 Pure White. Now to add the tires. More Volkswagen to come... Edited January 26, 2022 by mrmike
mrmike Posted January 27, 2022 Author Posted January 27, 2022 The interior is underway as we speak. All the seats are complete and I added the spare tire to the interior. The chassis is underway as well. I added a tool box to the drivers side of the engine compartment. The wheels and tires will need a coat of flat clear as one of the whitewall decals came off. I tried to replicate the whitewall with some flat white paint since my white Jelly Roll pen didn't want to work properly. More Volkswagen to come... 1
Mike C. Posted January 27, 2022 Posted January 27, 2022 (edited) If you have been waiting for the Westfalia version like I have, I was just able to order it from Hobbylinc.com. https://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/rvl/rvl67676.htm Edited January 27, 2022 by Mike C.
mrmike Posted January 28, 2022 Author Posted January 28, 2022 The Camper version does not interest me like it would for others.

mrmike Posted January 29, 2022 Author Posted January 29, 2022 I got all the seats installed on the VW, but they do look somewhat plain. I dug into the parts box and I found these decals from two Revell '29 Model A Roadsters and I thought that they would look good on the seats. That was when I discovered the two different decal colorings. Time to rethink my process! I removed the decals from the tires since I found some new decals in my parts box. More Volkswagen to come...
slusher Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 The Volkswagens I remember growing up all the seats ? was plain…
David G. Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 Excellent engine and chassis detail! The interior is coming along nicely too but I agree with Carl, all the VW seats I've seen were plain or had textured vinyl. Of course, a custom build is a custom build and you can build them any way you want. In that case, those decals would be great for a Bomber Jacket Leather look. David G.
Mike C. Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 (edited) As far as I can remember, they got the regular seats correct but they seem to have nailed the Westfalia plaid pattern pretty good as well if you had the tan interior. I still plan to put them in when I finally get mine even though the 1:1 I had was the orange with the green plaid interior. This is just a googled photo but this is exactly how I remember it. Mine was covered with surfing stickers. I wonder if I could get someone to make me some. ? Edited January 30, 2022 by Mike C. 2
mrmike Posted January 31, 2022 Author Posted January 31, 2022 Thanks guys! I want something a bit more graphic in appearance than the plain seats. I'll either get some graphic contact paper or paint the seats with a contrasting color. 1

Mine was covered with surfing stickers. I wonder if I could get someone to make me some. ? The Plaid seats were only used in the Westfalia busses. Westfalia was a coach build of sorts. The plain jane bus was sent to Westfalia (not owned by VW) to be converted. They were "authorized" by VW, but not converted by VW. Westfalia would recover the seats to match the interiors. The Revell kit represents a "Late" Type 2 T2 or "Baywindow" bus. 1972-1979 had the type 4 engine in this kit. However the lack of an engine access panel in the cargo area means that this was a 1972. A one year only, 1973 the panel was added above the engine. However, the bumpers are 1973 and later. So, I'm not sure what year this is supposed to be. It looks to be a 73+ but missing the engine panel. The spare tire well is also missing from the kit. See photo. A little trivia, the rarest option for a US T2 was the Tripometer below the Odometer. I once bought a complete bus just to get that cluster. Automatics were also rather rare and that bus had one of those too. I have owned many of these. I am a fount of useless aircooled VW information. I am enjoying the work you are doing MrMike, keep it up. These are on my list to do in the future. Edited January 31, 2022 by Oldmopars
Mike C. Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 Mine was either a '77 or '78. It did have the access panel above the engine, under that bedding pad. Mine was probably the base model. One thing I do remember was it had one of the most unreliable fuel injection systems I have ever seen. After I replaced all of the injectors and fuel system type stuff (I even installed an exhaust headder), I took it to 2 different so call Volkswagen specialists who could do nothing to help me. Both basically agreed that I needed a new "brain" (not in my head ?) I was the electronic box that controlled the injection system. The downside was that it was really expensive and there was no guarantee that even the new one would work correctly. So I cut my losses and sold it for $800. Now they are worth a small fortune ?.
mrmike Posted February 1, 2022 Author Posted February 1, 2022 Thanks Scott and Mike! I'm not 100% sure of the year, but it really doesn't matter to me. I went and used Tamiya X-26 Clear Orange on the plain seats of the VW T2 Bus. This changed the look of the interior! I just need to tone down the glossiness with some flat or semi gloss clear. More Volkswagen to come...
mrmike Posted February 4, 2022 Author Posted February 4, 2022 I found new whitewall decals in my parts box and I believe they came from the Revell '68 Dodge Charger R/T. I had mounted the spare tire on the left interior sidewall, but as I looked at it, I didn't like the fact that it was too close to the sidewall. I made a bracket to space the spare tire away from the wall some. This will allow some room when the body is placed over it. I used Model Master Semi Gloss Clear on the seats and the paint ran which indicates that the clear is too hot for the paint. I'll repaint the seats and use Tamiya TS-79 Semi Gloss Clear instead, which shouldn't be as chemically hot. More Volkswagen to come...
slusher Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 The tire decals look good. I hope they stay put this time. …
