I do mock ups on every build and this one needed the full treatment. BMW 3.5 csl, my favorite group 5 race car but never put into a kit by a top notch manufacturer so  this project combines elements from multiple sources. The body comes from Otaki but it comes from the era of motorized kits ( no chassis per say and grossly undersized wheels and tires). E24 based Tamiya BMW provides a donor chassis, tires form a Tamiya Porsche 956 and resin/PE aftermarket wheels. Lots of work to achieve proper track, wheelbase and stance as well as providing for chassis to body locating points. Lots of fun, lots of mock ups!

Had the box down this was in so, Threw some paint on it to see how it looked.

Its an original Barry Setzer MPC vega  AA/FC kit ( not a big fan of the Revell version )

Paint is Tamiya TS20 metallic green over a Tamiya silver leaf base color to seal the molded in red body color

And I LIKE IT

Anyone dare a guess as to which car Im thinking ?

Great looking chopped sedan Greg, which body is that?

AND............. ya mean 600 ISN'T darn fine sandpaper???  LOL

That is this one…slightly modified.? I thought it was fine, but 600 divided by 25 equals 24 grit in 1:1 scale.?

I hear ya! I was attempting to mount the doors when one of the hinges flew out of my tweezers and into a parallel dimension.? So I covered the entire inner sides with a layer of .015” styrene sheet, glued the doors in place and filled the seams. There…I fixed it!?

Is that a Viper engine?

Yes.? It’s just something I plunked in there for a mock up. That’s not even the kit frame, but the engine sits very nicely on the mounts and cross member so….?

Original mock up had the kits pro street tires. IMG_5770.thumb.jpeg.6464ae524a49776412141a11f05f8a9f.jpeg

While it looks cool it wasn’t the pro touring look I’m going for so I ordered a set of wheels from Jays Resins.

I think these look better for the look I’m trying to achieve.

Hello friends,

back in March one of my best friends passed some 1/25 and 1/24 kits and parts to me.  Included was a Revell ‘29 Model A pickup which he had chopped ages ago.  I have been fiddling bashing it with the bed and fenders/running boards from the AMT Ala-Kart.

Said parts have been rather modified mostly by shaving trim and tail light blisters off the bed and removing Ala-Kart’s rear fenders and just piecing together new ones out of fenders from other kits in order to get them bobbed high so as to slam the ride height.  Another friend gave me leftover parts from a Watson race car so I am using 2 of the tires from that kit for the rear rolling stock.   Front tires are the often dreaded vintage Revell 2 piece units found in many of their funny cars and gassers.
I have yet to settle on an engine and the floor of the cab must pretty much be scratched or bashed in order to channel the chassis up high.  I’m thinking of scratching some quick and dirty compressed air bags for at least the rear suspension.
I am thinking of using a frame from one of my unbuilt Revell 29 Pickups but it will have to be seriously modified.  The way I have it set up now is I scratch built the rear frame from Plastruct and Evergreen rectangle but it is attached to the fender portion!  From the rear frame rails forwards will be glued under the cab floor later.  In other words the frame will be done in 2 sections….i kind of got myself in a bit of a pickle.  I wish for the frame rails to be a different color than the fender assembly.  I think I will just shoot the whole shebang whatever color I put on the fenders/body and then after the painted frame rails dry I will paint them by brush something easy to match like gloss black.  Then I can spray paint the other frame piece which will get glued in later gloss black and it should match up pretty decently.
lastly I’m leaning towards a steel color to represent bare metal.  I may try to put a welding bead around the whole cab where it was chopped.  I have some Archer weld bead resin decals but I think I want to try crimping very thin gauge solder to try to make it look like a weld.  I’d probably have to epoxy it onto the cab.  I don’t know for sure yet but I have long wanted a crazy looking A Bone pickup.  Hope you like it and happy building friends!-Mark

I will take another shot sometime minus the distracting box in the background.  I thought it was a cool idea when I saw other folks on here do the same but their photography looked much better than mine!  Also all that masking tape looks awful!….Sorry.

Lastly…no the doors won’t be opening.  I have cut the doors open on so many projects over the years and love the way it enables a better view of the interiors.  I know how much extra work and time it adds to a build.  That said it figures that when i actually build a kit with opening doors what do I do?…..glue them shut!  The method to my madness though is that with all the extra cutting I was going to do on the cab I just thought it would be too anemic to handle the stress…..especially that vintage Revell plastic.  Can we say brittle?!  I hated to glue them closed but I believe it was a wise move (at least for a klutz like me!

Mock-ups are quite essential: for self-motivation and for checking ride-height of a vehicle to achieve the stance you want to get, especially when kit-bashing or modifying/reworking old builts like this '68 Ford 3 L prototype:

This one is underway in the WIP section, finally got far enough along that I could get a decent mock. Nothing glued, or “finish” painted yet, just a Quick Look to see where I’m at.

Holy cow Steve ,  that looks like a monster but simultaneously classy with the orange pearl!  Nice work as always.
